Yellowjacket Softball to Play PacWest Home Opener Saturday (April 11, 2003)

BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings softball team will play its Pacific West Conference home opener this weekend when the Yellowjackets host Chaminade University on Saturday and Sunday.  Double-headers are scheduled for both days with the first game starting at 2:00 p.m. at Cenex Stadium.  It will be the first time that Chaminade has ever played in Billings.

MSU Billings has used a five-game winning streak to improve to 8-13 overall.  The Yellowjackets are 1-7 in PacWest play after their early season swing to Hawaii.  Chaminade is 7-26 overall and 2-14 in the PacWest after dropping four games at ninth-ranked Western New Mexico earlier in the week.

Stephanie Cochrun is batting .462 in 11 games for the Yellowjackets, good for the highest current average in the PacWest.  Joey Ehnes, Theresa Campbell, and Cami Rainey are also hitting above .300 for the season.  Ehnes is hitting at a .348 clip from the leadoff slot, while Campbell has a .319 average and Rainey is batting .300.  Sara Hanley leads the team with 12 RBI with Terilee Ehnes and Michelle Falsken close behind with 11 apiece.

Ehnes and Megan McCrae anchor the Yellowjacket pitching staff.  Ehnes is 3-3 in seven appearances with a 2.33 ERA.  She has struck out 30 and walked only 19 in 39 innings of work.  McCrae is 5-7 with a 2.61 ERA and has struck out 56 in 72.1 innings.  She is third in the PacWest for total strikeouts and second for opposing batting average at .210

Chaminade is led by pitchers Donnell Wittekind and Loihi McKeague, both of whom have made 17 appearances this season.  McKeague has a 3.48 ERA and Wittekind has a 3.54 ERA.  Alicia Quindt leads the Silversword offense with a .262 batting average in 24 games.  Pua Reis is tied for second in the PacWest with five home runs and has driven in 16 of the Swords’ 49 runs.

Note:  On Sunday, the Yellowjackets will be holding a home run contest at Cenex Stadium.  The entry fee is $10 with the winner splitting half the pot with the softball team.  The contest is limited to the first ten males and ten females to sign up.  Call 657-2398 to register.  The Rock Pile Sports Bar will also be offering food and beverage specials before and after Sunday’s double-header.
