Yellowjacket Tennis Teams Split with Fairfield
University (March 12, 2003)
PHOENIX, AZ – The MSU Billings
men’s and women’s tennis teams split their matches
against Division I Fairfield University at the Paseo
College Challenge in Phoenix, with the men’s team
winning 4-3 and the women’s team falling 4-3.
The men’s team used strong
singles play to take the 4-3 victory. The
Yellowjackets swept singles matches #3, #4, #5, and
#6 to seal the win. The match was played with the
Division I format in which doubles matches count for
one point. Fairfield won two of the three doubles
matches to earn the point.
MSUB’s Ryan Smith dropped the
#1 match 6-1, 6-2 and Sergio Diaz lost a hard-fought
match at #2, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Jackets rallied
with singles victories from Jose Garcia at #3,
Kellen Malone at #4, Rafael Gale at #5 and Andres
Calabro at #6.
The Lady Jackets came within
one match of completing the sweep of Fairfield.
MSUB picked up wins from #3 Becky Fry, #4 Jenni Howe
and #6 Margot Merrill-Johnson. However, the dropped
singles matches #1, #2 and #5 and lost two of the
three doubles matches to give the point and the
match to Fairfield.
Both teams next face Rock
Valley College of Illinois, followed by a men’s
match against Lake Forest University and a women’s
match with Rochester (NY) University.
