The Lady Yellowjackets are quickly proving to be worthy adversaries in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as the team earned its fourth-straight conference win Saturday defeating Seattle University 75-66.  The Division I-bound Redhawks could not overcome a strong second half put up by the Yellowjackets.

Trailing by six to open the contest, the Lady Jackets’ Dani Henderson (Reed Point) evened the score at eight apiece following a jumper at the 15:52 mark.  A three-pointer by Kayla McPherson (Glendive) opened up a thee-point Yellowjacket lead midway through the half, but a spirited Seattle battled to trade the lead several times with MSUB.  With 11 ticks on the clock the Redhawks’ Quinn Brewe netted one of a pair of free throws to give Seattle the 37-36 lead heading into the locker room.

A pair of free throws by Alira Carpenter (Lewistown) and a jumper by Shantell Marquis (Cascade) to open the second half put the Lady Jackets ahead by three.  At the 14:37 mark Seattle knotted the game at 46 apiece on a 3-pointer by Chelsie Morrison.  Held in a stalemate neither team scored for nearly two minutes until the Jackets’ Carpenter ignited a spark that would turn into a 28-16 run, clinching the important conference road win.

Carpenter led all scorers netting 20 points off 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.  Connecting on 2-of-4 from long range, Carpenter was an effective 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.  McPherson chipped in 16 points, while Marquis added 13 points and seven rebounds.  Jen Smith (Belgrade) also grabbed seven boards in the game.

The Lady Jackets were 29-of-36 from the free throw line for 81 percent.  Connecting on 21-of-27 from the floor and 4-of-8 from the perimeter, the Jackets shot over 45 percent from both ranges.  The team outrebounded Seattle 35-30.

GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Jackie Hollands, Seattle Pacific (G, 5-9, Sr., Oregon City, OR) and Mallory Whipple, Northwest Nazarene (G, 5-7, Jr., Redmond, OR). . .Hollands scored 45 points (14-26 FGs, 8-16 three-pointers, 9-10 FTs) and also had nine assists, eight steals and eight rebounds as the Falcons stayed unbeaten in 15 games handing Western Washington its worst home loss in history and beating Central Washington by 12 at Ellensburg. . .Whipple scored 19 points and also led the Crusaders with 14 assists and six steals in double-digit round wins at Ellensburg and Bellingham.  Whipple made seven of 14 shots, four of six from the three-point line, in addition to directing a offense that shot 49.6 percent (67-135) and had just 25 turnovers and a plus 13 takeaway advantage.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Rebecca Kielpinski, Alaska Anchorage (C, 6-2, Jr., Mandan, ND) scored 31 points and also had 15 rebounds and 10 blocks as the Seawolves extended their school-record home win streak to 29 games.  Kielpinski, who also had seven assists and four steals, made 13 of 20 shots. . . Joscelyn Shumate, Alaska Fairbanks (F, 6-0, Sr., Fairbanks, AK - Lathrop) scored 28 points and also had 15 rebounds and 12 blocks as the Nanooks split two games.  Shumate, who had six blocks in both games, made 12 of 19 shots.

AROUND THE GNAC: Seattle Pacific’s 42-point win over Western Washington was the Vikings’ third worst loss ever and its most lopsided home loss in Carver Gymnasium history. The only WWU losses by a larger margin were a 99-49 loss at Portland in 1982-83, and a 97-51 loss to St. Joseph's, Penn., at the 1977 AIAW National tournament.

TEAM NOTES

Alaska Anchorage: Alaska Anchorage held its two opponents to a .307 shooting percentage  and a total of 91 points in improving to 13-0 at home this season.  In addition to Kielpinski’s 31 points, the Seawolves got 28 points from Kalhie Quinones and 26 from Maria Nilsson.

Alaska Fairbanks: Sheena Brown led the Nanooks with 34 points and Shumate and Kari Reabold had 28 apiece as UAF split two games. Reabold had team-highs of 17 rebounds and  five steals.  Reabold also became the 30^th member of the GNAC 1000-Point Club increasing her total to 1,002.

Central Washington:  Hanna Hull scored 33 points and Ashley Fenimore had 22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in a pair of home losses.  Shaina Afoa led the Wildcats with 17 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Montana State Billings: Alira Carpenter scored 20 points and Kayla McPherson had 16 as the Yellowjackets ran their win streak to four with a nine-point win at Seattle University, handing the Redhawks only their second loss of the season.

Northwest Nazarene:  Brittney Roggenkamp led a balanced attack with 28 points (11-20 FG, 4-9 three-pointers) in 31 and 16-point road wins at CWU and WWU, respectively.  The Crusaders also got 24 points each from Nichole Schutte and Janee Olds, 22 points and 16 rebounds from Kristin Hein and 19 points each from Jennifer Williams and Whipple.

Saint Martin’s:  Jamey Gelhar had 26 points and 10 rebounds and Dara Zack had 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Saints split two games in Alaska.  In Saturday’s game at UAF, Michelle Short scored 13 of her 15 points in the final five minutes as the Saints rallied from an 11-point deficit. Short’s three-pointer with 28 seconds left was the difference in a 63-61 win.

Seattle:  Jackie Thomas scored a career-high 17 points in the Redhawks’ home loss to MSU Billings.  Thomas made six of nine shots and all five of her free throws.  She also led SU with three assists and tied for the team lead with three steals.

Seattle Pacific:  The Falcons shot 52.7 percent from the floor (59-112) and 84.4 percent (38-45) from the foul line in their two wins.  They also finished with 18 more rebounds (73-55) and 12 fewer turnovers (28-40) than their opponents.

Western Oregon:  Leada Berkey had 29 points and 18 rebounds and Vanessa Wyffels scored 26 points in a pair of losses in Alaska..  The Wolves made just 30.7 percent of their shots (35-114).

Western Washington:  Claire Pallansch had 33 points and Amanda Dunbar had 32, but no one else had more than eight as the Vikings suffered their seventh and eighth losses in a row.  WWU was outshot .471 to .339, outrebounded 77-64 and had 11 more turnovers (44-33).

Kevin Woodin enters his fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at MSU Billings in 2007-2008.  He has posted a 61-26 overall record in his first three seasons, capturing two Heartland Conference regular season titles and once conference tournament championship.  Two of Woodin's three teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.  His first win of the 2007-2008 season will move him to No. 3 in school history for career wins.

Woodin became the Lady Yellowjackets' eleventh head women's basketball coach when he took over on July 23, 2004.  He had been the head girl’s basketball coach at Billings West High School for the past ten seasons.  In that time, he led the Lady Bears to a 138-81 record (.630), including back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2003 and 2004.  Woodin’s Bears were a perfect 23-0 in 2004's title run and won the final 36 games Woodin coached at the school.  He earned Montana AA Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and 2004, and was a finalist for the award in 1999 and 2002.

A native of Libby, Mont., Woodin graduated with a degree in mathematics from Carroll College in 1987.  While teaching and coaching at O’Dea High School in Seattle, he earned his masters degree in Athletic Administration from Seattle Pacific University in 1992.  Woodin taught mathematics at O’Dea High School from 1987 to 1994 while also coaching boy’s basketball, golf and tennis.  He was named O’Dea’s Outstanding Teacher of the year in 1990-1991 and the Metro League Golf Coach of the Year three times.

Woodin moved to Billings in 1994 to take over the girl’s program at West High School where he has also taught mathematics.   Along with leading the Lady Bears to State AA tournament hardware in four of his last six seasons, Woodin was also an assistant coach on the Montana All-Star Team and an Executive Committee member and coach for the Treasure State Classic.  At West High, Woodin coached 19 players who went on to play collegiate basketball.

Before the Montana High School Association moved the girl’s basketball season to the winter, Woodin was a part time assistant coach at MSU Billings from 2000-2003.  Responsible for practice and game planning, recruiting, scouting, individual skill development, travel and coordinating the Billings Bees camps, Woodin helped the Lady Yellowjackets to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons.

Woodin has been married to his wife Paula for 20 years, and they have three children (Kayleen, 14; Toria, 11; Garrett, 9).  His parents, Pete and Loretta Erickson, formerly of Roundup, Montana, reside in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

The 2007-2008 season will be Visger's second as a full-time assistant for the Lady Jacket basketball team.  She is a 2003 graduate of Montana State University-Billings.  She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology with a minor in chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a 3.91 GPA.  As a senior in 2003 Visger was named the Outstanding Biology Senior.

“I am very excited to have Natalie join our staff at MSUB,” said Woodin.  “She brings a tremendous amount of experience to the program, both as a player and as a coach.  We are very fortunate to have her, and I am confident she will have a positive impact upon our program.  Natalie’s duties will include directing and assisting with the pre- and postseason weight training and conditioning program, game and practice preparation, recruiting, film exchange, scouting, academic monitoring, travel arrangements, basketball camps and tournaments, and individual skill development.”

Visger was a four-year standout on the basketball court for the Lady Yellowjackets.  As a two-time team captain she helped the Yellowjackets reach three NCAA Tournaments in four years.  As a freshman and sophomore Visger was an All-Pacific West Conference selection.  As a senior she was named the Montana State University-Billings Outstanding Female Student-Athlete.

Known as a tenacious competitor, Visger made several impressions in the Yellowjacket record books.  She still ranks twelfth in school history for scoring with 1,219 career points.  She is also in the career top 10 for free throws made, free throw percentage, rebounds, and rebounding average.

After graduating in 2003, Visger played professionally in Europe for three seasons.  In 2003-2004 she played for TV-Langen in Langen, Germany.  She finished the season ranked second in the league for scoring average at 20.7 ppg. 

In 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 Visger played for ASG Theresianum Mainz in Mainz, Germany.  In the ‘04-‘05 season she was again second in the league for scoring at 18.5 ppg and led her team to a second place finish in the league.  Last year along with playing for the Women's first team, which again finished second in the league, she was the head coach for the Women's third team.  In addition to playing professional basketball, Visger, who speaks fluent German, worked as a document translator for STI Security Training International GmbH in Wiesbaden, Germany.
