  Week in Review

The Yellowjackets bounced back from a pair of road losses to win two games at home last weekend.  They dispatched cross-town rival Rocky Mountain 3-1 on Thursday and picked up a GNAC win against Seattle, 3-1, on Saturday.

Devon Crotteau’s career-high 27 kills led MSU Billings to a 3-1 non-conference win over Rocky Mountain College on Thursday.  The Yellowjackets defeated their cross-town rivals for the 10th-straight time, 30-26, 21-30, 30-27, 30-19.

The teams traded the first two games of the match in similar fashion.  The Yellowjackets led wire-to-wire in the opening game, out-hitting the Bears .170 to .100.  Crotteau had eight kills in the game.  The Bears responded with a resounding 10-point win in the second game, hitting a solid .243.

Rocky maintained control of the match after the intermission and built a 22-19 lead in the third game.  But the Jackets battled back behind the service of Hillary Morrison.  The sophomore was instrumental in the Jackets’ 3-1 win at Rocky back in early October when she served up 10-straight points in the deciding fourth game.  On Thursday, Morrison served seven straight MSUB points starting when the Jackets trailed 22-21.

By the time the Bears finally broke Morrison’s serve, the Jackets led 27-23, and they cruised to a 2-1 lead in the match.  In the fourth game, MSUB broke from a 9-9 tie to win going away.  Stefania Aladjova had three of her match-high five service aces to help the Jackets close the game and the match.  MSUB out-hit RMC .261 to .075 in the game.

With the five aces, Aladjova broke the all-time single season school record for aces held by Nicole Kruse.  Aladjova has 65 aces with three matches remaining in the season.  She also picked up a career-high 17 digs and handed out 52 assists.

“One of our goals in the beginning of the match was to come out aggressive serving and passing,” said Yellowjacket head coach Sara Schaub.  “The difference between the three games we won and game two was that we did that.”

“Devon had a great match.  She played solid in all four games; 27 kills and a .290 hitting percentage is excellent for an outside hitter.  It was great to see Stefania get on a roll with her serving again.  We’ll look for her continuing that tough serving through the next three matches.”

Jennifer Boe also had a career high for kills with 17.  She hit .227 on 44 attempts and added 16 digs.  Crotteau had 15 digs, and Kruse added 11.  Alicia Cazemier knocked down 13 kills.

Montana State Billings overcame a slow start Saturday night to defeat Seattle University 3-1 in GNAC volleyball.  The Jackets rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win convincingly, 24-30, 30-17, 30-17, 30-22.

MSU Billings improved to 17-9 overall and 9-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  It was the Jackets’ seventh win in eight home matches this season.  Seattle fell to 10-14, 7-9.

Game one was a seesaw affair for the first 20 points with neither team leading by more than four points.  Seattle broke away from the 20-20 tie, finishing with a 10-4 run to win the game.  It turned out to be the Redhawks’ only positive hitting game of the night.

The Yellowjackets completely dominated the second game, charging to a 20-5 lead before Seattle was able to gain any ground.  By then it was too late, and MSUB hit a solid .306 for the game while holding the Redhawks to a -.114 hitting percentage.

The pattern from game two continued after the intermission with the Yellowjackets out-hitting Seattle a combined .234 to -.057 in the final two games of the match.  The last time the Redhawks led in the match was the final point of the first game.

Three Yellowjackets hit for double-digit kills, led by Alicia Cazemier’s 17.  She hit .364 on 33 attempts and was also in on four blocks.  Devon Crotteau had 15 kills and a match-high 20 digs.  Jennifer Boe added 10 kills and nine digs.

Jessica Lechner finished with nine kills and five blocks for the Jackets.  Setter Stefania Aladjova handed out 46 assists as MSUB hit .215 for the match.  Nicole Kruse picked up 17 digs.

The Redhawks were led by nine kills apiece from Nikole Thompson and Janet Beckerman.  Beckerman had an efficient night at the net, committing only one error on 20 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage.  She and Thompson were the only Redhawks with positive attack percentages.

The Yellowjackets close out the regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend.  They host defending GNAC champion Seattle Pacific on Thursday and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.  Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will be video streamed live on the internet at www.pennatlantic.com.  Saturday’s match will also be Senior Night for Cazemier and Kruse.  Sophomore Katrina Solomon will also be honored along with the seniors.  The nursing major will have to transfer to Montana State in Bozeman to continue her academic courses next year.

Schaub’s coaching experience was most recently at Division I Eastern Michigan University where she was the first assistant since 2002.  She helped the Eagles to the program’s first Mid-America Conference West Division Championship in 2005.  Schaub’s responsibilities were recruiting, practice organization, and leading a successful volleyball camp program at Eastern.

“I am extremely excited and honored to be the next head coach at MSU Billings,” said Schaub.  “I am very grateful to Dr. Gray and the entire search committee for giving me this opportunity.  I feel very fortunate to join such an upbeat and visionary department.  I look forward to working with the student-athletes, building an exciting program, and being part of the Billings community.”

Schaub, originally from Huron, Ohio, was a four-year starter for the Eastern Michigan Eagles as an outside hitter.  Schaub is the only player in Mid-American Conference history to average over four kills and four digs per game in the same season.  She currently holds the record at Eastern Michigan for career attack attempts and is second for career kills and digs, sixth for career aces, and seventh for career block assists.
