Week in Review

The Yellowjackets are off to a 2-0 start to the season after picking up road wins in Colorado last week. For just the fifth time in the program's 12-year history, the Jackets have posted three consecutive wins dating back to the last game of the 2006 season.

The Jackets opened the season with a 2-0 shutout win over Colorado Christian in Denver last Thursday. Freshman standout Chris Andre scored his first collegiate goal and eventual game winner just 20 minutes into the first half. The 2006 Heartland Conference Co-Freshman of the Year Sam Charles scored an insurance goal for the Jackets on a pass from fellow Englander Scott Dixon with 13 minutes to play.

Riding the high of Thursday's win, the Jackets handed first-year program Mesa State a 2-0 loss in Grand Junction Sunday. Charles was the offensive force behind solid Jacket defense scoring two second half goals for MSUB. Charles found the net at the 61 minute mark off a pass from teammate Jeremy DeHerrera. Just nine minutes later Charles scored again off a penalty kick giving him his third goal in just two games.

The Yellowjackets' defense is holding their own as expected. Allowing just seven shots on goal in two games, goalkeeper Sander Tollefson has made all seven saves to post 302:29 consecutive shutout minutes in goal moving him into the number one spot in school history for consecutive shutout minutes played.

If the team were to pick up a win over first-year program Great Falls Saturday, it will be the winningest start to a men's soccer season and would top the record books for most consecutive wins ever at four.

AROUND THE GNAC: Joining Cascio on the all-tournament team at Rohnert Park for the Redhawks were midfielders John Fishbaugher and Andrew Kreiter and goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira. Kreiter had a goal and an assist and DeOliveira, a transfer from San Francisco, had five saves and allowed just one goal. . .MSUB goalie Sander Tollefson had seven saves in recording a pair of shutouts as the Yellowjackets extended their win streak to three games, all by shutouts (dating back to the final game of last season). It is only their fifth three-game win streak in school history. . .Matt Pele assisted on two of Western Washington’s goals in their 4-0 win against Hawaii Hilo. . .Bardsley was the 2007 Seattle Times KingCo 3A Player of the Year as a senior at Mount Si High School where he scored a school-record 55 career goals, including 23 in his senior season. . .Seattle Pacific goalkeeper Kellen Rosten had 12 saves as the Falcons got a 3-2 win and a 0-0 draw in road contests at Chico and Stanislaus despite being outshot 34-12.

GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Gibson Bardsley, Western Washington (F, 5-11, Fr., Fall City, WA – Mt. Si) scored three goals in his collegiate debut leading the Vikings to a 4-0 win over Hawaii Hilo.

HONORABLE MENTION: Sam Charles, MSU Billings (F, So., Chiswell, England) scored three goals leading the Yellowjackets to a pair of 2-0 road wins. He scored MSUB’s second goal in Thursday’s 2-0 win at Colorado Christian, then scored a pair of second-half goals, including one on a penalty kick, in a 2-0 win at Mesa State. . .James Coggan, Seattle Pacific (F, 5-11, Sr., Sr., San Jose, CA – Valley Christian) scored the go-ahead goal and set up what turned out to be the game-winner in a 3-2 road win at Chico State. . .Jason Cascio, Seattle (F, 5-11, Sr., Gilbert, AZ - Hamilton) was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the Seawolf Classic as the Redhawks beat Humboldt State 3-0 and host Sonoma State 2-1. He scored the first goal against Sonoma and was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick for the game-winner.

Upcoming Opponents

University of Great Falls (webpage) - The Argos are off to a 0-2 start in their inaugural season of men's soccer. Great Falls dropped a 5-1 decision to open the season against Evergreen State College before falling 3-1 to Corban College the next day. Michael David is the lone Argos to score a goal in each of the two games. Great Falls is scheduled to play Western Wyoming Community College and Wenatchee Valley Community College before making the trip to Billings on Saturday.

The Coaches

Dan McNally, Head Coach

The 2007 season will be Dan McNally's third as the head men's soccer coach at MSU Billings. His teams are 10-24-2 overall in two seasons. In 2005-2006 the Yellowjackets had their best success in the classroom with the men's soccer program leading the Heartland Conference with a 3.32 grade point average.

McNally came to MSU Billings from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was the top assistant coach for four years.

McNally began his playing career at Bury FC (English 2^nd Division), where he was an Apprentice until 1996. In the summer of 1996 McNally moved to the United States to attend Embry-Riddle University where he played soccer.

During his time at Embry-Riddle, he led the Eagles to the 1998 FSC Tournament Championship and the 1999 FSC Regular Season Championship. At Embry-Riddle, McNally was named All-Conference, All-Region and Honorable Mention All-America. He was selected as team MVP his freshman and sophomore years and was a team captain as a senior.

McNally holds NSCAA National and Advanced National coaching licenses, passing both courses with distinction.

McNally graduated in 2000 from Embry-Riddle University with a BS in Communications.

Assistant Coach Adam Spinelli

2007-2008 will be Spinelli's second year as the Yellowjackets' men's soccer assistant. He graduated from Nova Southeastern University with degrees in Business Administration and Sports and Recreation Management. He was a three-year college starter, playing two seasons at Southern New Hampshire University and one at Nova Southeastern.

In 2002 at Southern New Hampshire, Spinelli was named the Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year. He earned third team all-conference honors and was a starter for the Penmen in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game. At Nova Southeastern Spinelli was named to the All-South Region Academic Team and was an Academic All-America Nominee.

Spinelli currently holds a USSF National “C” license and a NSCAA National Goalkeeping license.
