Charles and Milroy Named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-Region

BILLINGS, Mont. – For the second year in a row, Montana State Billings’ men’s soccer standouts, Sam Charles and Tom Milroy, have been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-Region VII, announced this week.

Charles, a senior forward and native of Chiswell, England, carries a 3.6 grade point average in health and human performance.  Charles was a first team academic all-region selection and a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team selection last year.  He was one of a league-best seven men’s soccer players named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Star team last year, too.  In addition, Charles was named MSUB Male Student-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year in 2009 and was named GNAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a junior.

On the field, Charles has broken just about every record in MSUB men’s soccer history.  This past weekend, he broke his own season goals record (19) and points record (44) in the final two home games of his career.  He has 21 goals and 48 points this season after scoring 19 goals in each of the past two seasons.  He now is one goal from tying the GNAC record of 22 goals with one game to play.  In addition, Charles broke the conference career scoring and goals record this season in just over two full years in the conference.  He also set conference marks in consecutive games with a goal (9) and consecutive games with a point (15).  For his career, he has 66 goals 17 assists (tied school record) and 149 points. Since MSUB has been in the GNAC, he has 59 goals, 15 assists and 133 points.  His freshman year, the ‘Jackets played in the Heartland Conference.

Milroy, a senior defender and native of Aberdeen, Scotland, carries a 3.87 grade point average in health and human performance.  Milroy has been the cornerstone for the Yellowjacket program for four years.  He has played and started in every game in his career for a total of 71.  Milroy also is on the first team for the second consecutive season.  Last season, he led the GNAC with a 3.91 grade point average among men’s soccer players and also was one of a league-best seven Yellowjackets named to the GNAC Academic All-Star team.

On the field, Milroy has been a constant force for the Yellowjacket defense.  He is a captain and has scored an assist in each of the past two seasons for MSUB.  Milroy has started every game of his career and this season is third on the team in minutes with 1493.  He has helped anchor the defense to six shutouts this season.

Both Charles and Milroy will move on to the national selection which is scheduled to be announced Wed., Nov. 18.

The Yellowjackets will conclude the regular season Wed., Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at cross-town rival Rocky Mountain College in a make-up game from Oct. 11.
