Lady Jackets Post First GNAC Road Win

MSUB Season Stats

NAMPA, Idaho. – A pair of goals from senior Brittney Sandau lifted MSU Billings to a 3-1 win at Northwest Nazarene in women’s soccer on Saturday.  The win was the Jackets’ first conference road win since joining the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

MSU Billings improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.  It was an important win for the Yellowjackets as it moved them ahead of NNU in the GNAC standings.  The Crusaders dropped to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the league.

“I think we played a pretty solid game defensively and did some things in the attack to create some goals,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.  “We had good goalkeeping play, and were able to put all the pieces together and play a solid 90 minutes.  This was a good win on the road against a quality opponent in the conference.”

Sandau (Billings) opened the scoring just 15:15 into the contest when she took a pass from younger sister Samantha and beat Crusaders keeper Amanda Peters.  The game went to halftime with the Jackets leading 1-0 following an evenly-played opening 45 minutes.  MSUB out-shot NNU 9-8 in the first half and 9-3 in the second.

The Crusaders knotted the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the second half on a Hannah Mohs goal, her third of the season.  The tie was short-lived, however.  In the 53rd minute, Peters missed a clearing pass from one of her defenders, and the ball bounced over her head.  Sandau raced past her and deposited the ball into the net for her seventh goal of the season.

The Jackets added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Jelisa Guy (Kalispell) won a tackle and laced a tough pass to Danielle Ritter (Great Falls), who netted her third goal of the season.

Jordan Fenwick (Boise, Idaho) earned her first collegiate win in goal, making six saves and allowing just one goal.  She made 23 saves during the two-game road trip.  Peters finished with five saves.

“Brittney did a good job of scoring some goals for us,” said Trentham, “but it was a great team effort.  Any time you can get a win on the road it’s important.  With eight of our first 11 games away from home, we’re excited to get back to Billings.  It will be good to have six of our last nine games in Billings.  We’re hoping we can build on this and string some wins together.”

The Yellowjackets will face Rocky Mountain College in a non-conference neutral site game next Wednesday.  The Jackets and Bears will kick off at 7:00 p.m. at Daylis Stadium.  MSUB returns to GNAC play when the Jackets host Seattle University on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the College of Technology.
