Sweeps MSUB in Doubleheader, 5-3 and 6-4

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon posted a
pair of two run wins over Montana State Billings Friday
afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader,
5-3 and 6-4. With
the losses, the Yellowjackets fall to 13-37 overall and 4-24 in
conference play.
WOU improves to 38-16 and 23-7 in the GNAC.
The Wolves opened the scoring in the first
inning of game one with two runs as Dylan Bruck began the game
with a triple and was brought home by a RBI single later in the
inning. The Jackets
committed their first of three miscues resulting in the second
run of the inning.
A sacrifice fly and a Bruck RBI single
plated two more runs for the Wolves in the fourth for a 4-0
lead.
A two out rally in the sixth got the
Yellowjackets back in the game as Matt Schoonover doubled down
the left field line and scored on a Jonathan Schlender RBI
single. Moments
later, Levi Johnson scored on a Steve Larson single for a 4-2
score.
In the seventh, the Jackets had men at the
corners but were unable to get anything home.
WOU added another run in the seventh, but
the Jackets countered with a run in the eighth on back-to-back
doubles by Schlender and Matt Kakalecik for a 5-3 score.
MSUB would not get any closer.
Schoonover led the team going 3 for 5 with
a run scored. Tyler
Mieras went 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored to lead the
Wolves. Cody Clark
(2-3) takes the loss going six innings and allowing five earned
runs with eight hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Mike Eisenhauer picks up the victory for
WOU while Jared Neyens earns his sixth save of the year.
In the nightcap, MSUB matched WOU with
single runs in the first two innings, but the Wolves took the
lead in the third, 3-2.
Schoonover hit a RBI single in the first for the Jackets,
followed by Nick Rupert RBI single in the second.
The Wolves took the lead in the third as
Mieras singled down the line for a score.
MSUB tied the score at three in the fourth as Tyler
Nelson scored on a passed ball.
The Jackets left the bases loaded in the inning.
Western Oregon took control of the game in
the fifth as Bruck tripled down the line and a double later in
the inning gave the Wolves a 5-3 lead.
Bruck came up big again in the sixth as he roped a RBI
double for a 6-3 lead.
MSUB scored a run in the seventh on a RBI
single by Schoonover and left two on but were unable to score
more runs, falling 6-4.
Schoonover and Patch Wirtzberger led the
Jackets with two hits each.
Brian Howe (3-3) took the loss in six innings of work as
he allowed six earned runs, nine hits, two walks to go along
with three strikeouts.
The Jackets and Wolves will complete the
regular season tomorrow with the final doubleheader of the
series.
