Sweeps Yellowjackets

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado posted a
doubleheader sweep of Montana State Billings Sunday afternoon at
Jackson Field, 7-1 and posted a 4-3 come-from-behind victory.
With the losses, the Yellowjackets fall to 11-27 on the
year, while UNC improves to 11-22.
The Bears opened the game with three runs
in the first inning helped by a Yellowjacket error.
MSUB countered with a run in the top of the second on a
pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly for a 3-1
score.
The Bears scratched across a run in bottom
of the second on an error and added two more runs fourth and one
scored on another error as well for a 6-1 score.
MSUB couldn’t get anything else going,
falling 7-1 and tallying six hits.
Jeremy Knowles (2-5) took the loss for the
Jackets, allowing nine hits, seven runs – five earned, two walks
and a strikeout.
Jonathan Schlender was 2 for 4 to lead the team.
In the nightcap, the Yellowjackets jumped
out to a 3-0 lead as Matt Schoonover and Schlender tallied RBIs
for two runs in the fifth after Joe Via hit a RBI single in the
fourth.
The Bears clawed back with a RBI double in
the fifth, followed by three runs on two hits and one costly
Yellowjacket error in the sixth for a 4-3 lead.
A three RBI double sealed the victory for UNC.
Colorado native Brian Strom (0-5) took the
loss for the Yellowjackets as he went five and two thirds,
allowing four hits, four runs – only one earned, four walks and
three strikeouts.
The Jackets banged out 11 hits and outhit the Bears 11-5, but
left nine runners on base and committed two costly errors that
led to three of the four runs for UNC.
The Yellowjackets return home to play Saint
Martin’s Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 19-20) with the doubleheaders
beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
