Yellowjacket Golfers Trail in Rocky Invitational (9/25/06) 

BILLINGS, MT – After the first day of competition, the MSU Billings Yellowjacket men’s and women’s golf team trail the leader and host, Rocky Mountain Bears. Rocky’s Rachel Warren (76-72-148) and Kevin Odem (71-66-137) took home top individual honors for the day. Halley Montalban led the Yellowjacket women, shooting 77 and 79 for a 156 at the Peter Yagen Golf Course  Nate Redfern and Mike Watson lead the Jacket men, both notching a 74-75-149.

In the nine-team field of teams competing, the Jacket women currently sit in 3rd place with a team total of 328-336-664 for the 36 holes played today. Tied at the top for the women are Rocky Mountain College and Lewis and Clark State, each totaling 625. The men find themselves in 5th place, also looking up to the leader, RMC.  Montalban sits highest individually for both MSU-B teams, currently 5th.

Notables for the Jacket men include Kruise Kemp’s rounds of 72 and 78, giving him a day-one total of 150.  Kemp was followed by Tyler Nicholas’ 74-81-155 and TJ Stevenson, who shot an 81-89-170. The women, who totaled 328-336-664, were also led by Emily Maag, who turned in a score of 85-81-166.  Amy Nordeen followed with an 81-87-168 and Jessica Boyer’s 85-89-174.  Karrie Brack shot a 91 and 97, for a 188 total and Nicole Salsbery’s 101-100-201 rounded out MSU-B scores.   

“I thought the women’s team played really well,” said second year head coach Jeff Nelson. “They struggled on the greens, but they should play pretty well tomorrow.” Players will take on 18 more holes in the second day of action, scheduled for tomorrow at Peter Yagen in Billings.
