Yellowjackets Drop Second Game of Weekend (Oct. 10, 2004)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – A fast start carried Grand Canyon to a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Montana State-Billings on Sunday.  The Yellowjackets dropped their second-straight at home to fall to 5-10-0.  Grand Canyon won for the second time this weekend and just the second time this season to improve to 2-12-1.  The Antelopes defeated Si Tanka on Saturday after the Screaming Eagles downed MSU Billings on Friday in the round robin tournament.

Grand Canyon peppered Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kyle Bales (Sr., Cody, WY) early and often, finally breaking through at 38:48 for the first goal of the game.  The Lopes’ Cassio Saverino emerged from a crowd in front of the goal with the ball and scored from close range.  Grand Canyon out-shot the Yellowjackets 18-5 in the opening half and 31-15 in the game.  Bales finished the day with 13 saves.

Grand Canyon’s Ugljesa Vrbica scored his third goal of the weekend at 56:38 to give the Lopes a 2-0 lead.  Vrbica beat Bales one-on-one for the eventual game winning goal.

The Yellowjackets’ Marcus Riley (Jr., Kalispell, MT) scored his third goal of the season at 73:04 to keep MSU Billings within reach.  The Yellowjackets were unable to convert on a couple scoring opportunities late in the game, and Lopes goalkeeper Byron Bent made four of his six saves in the second half.

MSU Billings will conclude its home schedule next Thursday when the Yellowjackets host University of Mary at 2:00 p.m.  The Jackets downed the Marauders 2-1 in Bismarck in September.  MSU Billings finishes the season on the road with games at Colorado Springs and Metro State on October 17 and 18 respectively.
