Yellowjackets Stop Losing Skid with Win over Westminster (Oct. 3, 2004)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – A pair of goals from Thomas Pertuit gave MSU Billings a 3-0 shutout of visiting Westminster College on Sunday.  The win stopped a four-game losing streak and improved the Yellowjackets to 5-8-0.  Pertuit now has a team-best 11 goals for the season.

Pertuit (Sr., Billings, MT) opened the scoring at 12:01 on a penalty kick.  It was the second time this weekend that he has scored on a PK.  The Yellowjackets out shot the Griffins 6-2 in the opening half and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Clinging to a one goal lead, the Yellowjackets used two late goals to break open the game.  Brian Palmer (Sr., Laramie, WY) scored at 76:01 when he headed in a cross from Josh Hernandez (Fr., Palmdale, CA).  The goal was Palmer’s fourth of the year.  Pertuit put the game out of reach at 88:25 when he headed in a cross from Dustin Kono (Jr., Aberdeen, SD).

“We didn’t play our best today, but we were good enough to get the win,” said Pertuit.  “Hopefully this win will give us some momentum for our games against Si Tanka and Grand Canyon next week.”

Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kyle Bales (Sr., Cody, WY) made eight saves in the game, with seven coming in the second half as MSU Billings held onto its one goal lead.  Westminster out shot the Yellowjackets 9-7 in the second half, but were unable to get past Bales.

“We played a good game defensively,” said Yellowjacket head coach Doug Seigle, “and we shot the ball better offensively than we have been.  It was a good team effort, and the bench played well.  Our guys kept their cool at some tough times.”

For the second game in a row, Westminster was plagued with cards.  On Friday they lost to Colorado-Mines while earning six yellow cards and one red card.  They repeated the feat on Sunday with six yellow cards and one red card against the Yellowjackets.

MSU Billings continues its home stand next weekend when it hosts Si Tanka at 3:00 on Friday and Grand Canyon at 3:00 on Sunday.  Si Tanka and Grand Canyon will meet in a neutral site game on Saturday.
