Lady Jackets Shut Out at Seattle Pacific (Sept. 15, 2003)

SEATTLE, WA – The MSU Billings women’s soccer team lost its third straight match Monday evening, 5-0 to Seattle Pacific University.  The Yellowjackets drop to 2-3-1 for the season while the Falcons improve to 6-1.  SPU is ranked No. 7 in the Far West Region.  The Jackets also lost to Central Washington and nationally ranked Seattle University on their West coast swing.

Seattle Pacific jumped to an early 1-0 lead on Meg Lienhard’s goal off the right post just 1:58 into the match.  The Falcons added a second goal in the 23rd minute to take a 2-0 halftime advantage.  Alyssa Wolfer (Fr., Longmont, CO) was in goal for the Jackets for the first 60 minutes of the game, making ten saves and allowing three goals.

“We have a talented team,” said head coach Don Trentham.  “With the talent we have, we felt that we shouldn’t have come away from this trip 0-3.  We definitely have to start doing some things differently.  Things are easy when you start out 2-1-1.  After a trip like this, we’ll find out a lot about our team.  We’ll find out about our character when we see how we come out and play against Rocky on Saturday.”

The Falcons added three goals in an 11-minute stretch of the second half to put the game away.  Megan Plank (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) played the final 29 minutes of the game, allowing two goals.  The Yellowjackets were out-shot 26-2 with Margot Merrill-Johnson (Jr., Salt Lake City) and Ally Taylor (Fr., Ojai, CA) registering a shot-on-goal apiece.

“We’ve showed that we can win against some teams,” said Trentham of his young team.  “It’s important that we learn to win at that next level against the top teams in the region.  We have to play more than just a good game to win against those teams.  How we react this week will tell a lot.  It doesn’t get any easier when you play your arch rival in Rocky, who’s a very good team.  It’s got to be a good week of practice for us."

The Yellowjackets will play at Rocky on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in game one of the 2003 Rimrock Cup.  Rocky won both meetings against MSUB last year.
