Yellowjackets Place Fifth at PacWest Tennis Championships (April 12, 2003)

BILLINGS, MT – The BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis team was in top form Saturday as the Seasiders cruised to a 7-0 win over rival Hawaii Pacific to capture the 2003 Pacific West Conference title.  The only challenge in the match came in the #3 doubles where HPU’s Davelin Godinet and Bianca Barreto forced BYUH’s Trisha Piercy and Guri Korinihona into a tiebreak before Piercy and Korinihona finaly prevailed 9-7. 

Judy Weng, Anna Anikanova, Amy Sun and Adrienn Hegedus, the nation’s top-ranked women’s player, all won their singles matches in straight sets.  With the victory, the top-ranked Seasiders stretched their consecutive-match winning streak to 60 and will most likely host the regional tournament.

In the consolation match, Hawaii-Hilo easily handled Chaminade 5-0.  Mai Fujii and Krystal Hangai each posted 6-0, 6-0 singles victories to close out the match as the Vulcans took home third place.  MSU Billings placed fifth for the second year with a 5-0 win over Western New Mexico.  Becky Fry and Margot Merrill-Johnson each posted straight-set singles wins. 

The BYU-Hawaii men’s tennis team defeated defending PacWest champion Hawaii Pacific, 6-1, Saturday to capture the 2003 PacWest title.  Despite the score of the match, most of the individual matches were hotly contested.  The #1 single victory for the Seasiders’ Jan Krejci went three sets and the #3 doubles team of Wen-Lung Chang and Leon So’onalole needed a tiebreak to dispatch Jan Tribler and Stefan Pampulov.

Krejci, the nation’s top-ranked singles player, needed three sets to defeat HPU’s Mike Maatta, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.  The Seasiders’ Daouda Ndiaye also needed three sets to win his #5 singles match over Tribler, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.  Hawaii Pacific’s Blaz Jurjec picked up the Sea Warriors’ only win of the day, defeating Hong-Tae Kim in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.  The second-ranked Seasiders improved to 25-1 for the year and will hope to host the regional tournament as they continue the defense of their national title.

In the consolation match, Hawaii-Hilo dispatched Western New Mexico 5-0.  All three Vulcans doubles teams cruised to victories while Richard Korneck and Karl Moritz took home straight-set wins in #1 and #2 singles respectively.  MSU Billings finished fifth with a 5-1 win over Chaminade.  The Silverswords’ Kieran McCarteny and Albert Takakuwa won their doubles match for the team’s only victory.  MSUB’s Kellen Malone and Rafael Gale each captured straight-set singles wins.
