On July 1, 1994, the Montana Board of Regents of Higher Education restructured the state's colleges and universities into two umbrella universities, Montana State University and the University of Montana. MSU is the home campus for Montana State University, with the following affiliates:

MSU-Billings has been accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NWCCU). Eligible professional programs within the University are accredited by the following agencies:

  • National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
  • Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education
  • National Association of Schools of Music
  • National Association of Schools of Art and Design
  • Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business

The College of Technology is accredited by the following agencies:

  • National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
  • Montana Board of Nursing

Up Arrow Athletics

MSU Billings is a member of the NCAA II Great Northwest Conference.

  • Men compete in baseball, basketball, track & field, cross country, golf, and soccer.
  • Women compete in basketball, volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

The school colors are blue and gold, and teams are called "The Yellowjackets."
