Freshmen Students

Step 1: COMPASS Placement Testing

All freshmen must take the COMPASS placement test prior to their Registration session. Results of this test are used to advise students into the most appropriate English, mathematics, and reading courses. This test is self-paced and you may bring a calculator. To prepare ahead of time for the COMPASS test, visit www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.

To sign up, complete and submit the COMPASS Test & Registration Sign Up Form with your preferred testing dates. Please choose from the following testing sessions:

July 26, 2011 at 3:30 PM
August 1, 2011 at 9:00 AM
August 5, 2011 at 9:00 AM
August 12, 2011 at 9:00 AM

COMPASS testing is also available by individual appointment or remote testing. Please contact the College of Technology at 406-247-3007 for more information on these options.

Step 2: Registration Session

Students have two options for their Registration/Orientation Session which are outlined below. Students will sign up for their session after the COMPASS test. Staff from the College of Technology will be available to assist students in signing up for a Registration/Orientation session that best fits their needs.

Please note that many College of Technology majors fill quickly and/or are competitive. Please check with the College of Technology Student Services for availability.

Option 1: COT ½ Day Registration Session
(students selecting this option will also attend a ½ day Orientation Session later in the summer)

What happens on this day:

  • Session is held at the College of Technology campus
  • Meet with an academic advisor
  • Develop a personal plan of study
  • Register for classes
  • Get your University ID card (U-card)
  • Sign up for your Orientation Session

Registration Session Dates:

May 24
June 2, 14, 22, 24, 29
July 8, 13, 19, 27, 29
August 3, 4, 9, 11, 15

Option 2: Overnight University/College of Technology combined Registration & Orientation Session
(two full days of orientation with an overnight experience in the residence halls)

What happen during this session:

  • Majority of the program is on MSU Billings University campus
  • Stay overnight in the residence halls to experience living on campus
  • Participate in student life activities
  • Travel to the College of Technology
  • Meet with an academic advisor & register for classes
  • Tour COT campus
  • Get your University ID card (U-card)

Overnight Registration/Orientation Dates:

June 9-10
June 16-17
July 14-15
July 21-22

Students selecting this option are encouraged but not required to do an Orientation at the COT campus.

Transfer & Readmitting Students

Schedule a time for your individual Registration Session by calling 406-247-3019.

Please note that all previous college transcripts must be submitted and evaluated before scheduling your registration session. During the registration time you will take any necessary placement tests, meet with an advisor to register for classes and check on your financial aid status. We will also have you sign up for and upcoming Orientation session.
