COMPASS Placement Testing Details
All freshman students must take the COMPASS placement test at least two days prior to attending orientation. COMPASS tests will take place in the Tech Building at City College. Results of this test are used to advise students into the most appropriate writing, mathematics, and reading courses. This test is self-paced. To take a sample test, visit act.org/compass/sample/.
Students who have scheduled their COMPASS test will have priority when reserving their orientation date.
COMPASS testing is also available by individual appointment or remote testing. Please contact City College at (406) 247-3019 for more information about these options.

Freshman Orientation is a two-day introduction to college life at Montana State University Billings. Orientation provides an important campus experience including both academics and student life. In addition to academic advising, class registration, and workshops, you will meet and connect with other freshmen. All students are required to stay overnight in the residence halls during orientation and there is a $10 charge. Freshman Orientation for City College students will begin on the City College campus. Students will then continue with the session at the University campus.
The deadline for orientation registration is one week prior to the scheduled session. Orientation sessions have limited space.
Parent and Family Orientation
Many parents find it beneficial to attend orientation with their student. During orientation, parents and family members have the opportunity to attend workshops about academic advising, services on campus and financial aid. There is a $25 program fee per parent or guest which includes meals. Parents and guests may stay overnight in the residence halls for $10 per night. Orientation guests can make arrangements to stay on campus by contacting the Housing Office at (406) 657-2333. All fees will be collected at orientation.
