Rural Paraeducator Project

This project at Montana State University-Billings provides rural school paraeducators an opportunity to complete an assessment test at their CSPD region headquarters and/or, earn an on-line associates degree without having to leave their schools. The NCLB requirement that all paraeducators achieve "highly qualified" status poses particular challenges for rural site-bound paraeducators in Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming. This is a tri-state project that focuses on the training of site bound rural paraeducators in these states. While the effort is collaborative, each state will have a unique approach to providing training to the paraeducators. The collaboration will provide a support base for each state's project. Montana State University-Billings will be the lead institution in this collaboration. Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota and Casper College in Casper, Wyoming are the other post-secondary institutions involved in the project. The overall goal for this project is to guarantee that participating paraeducators in these rural, western states achieve the status of "highly qualified" through the series of activities proposed by each institution. Montana State University-Billings will serve eligible rural schools in the State of Montana. This web site describes the project services and application process for participation at Montana State University Billings.
