National Geographic Society Grant

2018-2020 - Dr. Barfield is working with two Mapuche tribal elders/educators, one Chilean teacher of English, and three schools in rural Patagonia, Chile, to create a tri-lingual (English, Spanish, Mapundungun) book based on a Mapuche folktale and illustrated by Mapuche students.  Teacher lessons were developed to assist teachers in how to use the book in the classroom and the grant will offer teacher workshops and in-services on how to teach their students to design their own eBooks to increase their classroom libraries.

U.S. English Language Specialist, Institute of Learning, University of Greenland, U.S. Embassy Copenhagen and U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs

Fall 2019 - Dr. Barfield conducted a needs assessment at the English teacher education program in Nuuk, Greenland. The two primary objectives were to identify possible strategies to assist preservice teachers of English and to find ways to encourage more institute students to choose English language education as one of their majors.

During her two weeks in Greenland, Barfield talked with Institute faculty, staff, and students, observed teacher education classes, attended a professional development workshop, discussed eLearning with interested instructors, and visited the Educational Agency. In addition, she met with representatives of the Greenland Ministry of Education, Culture, and Church, talked with the International & Communication Coordinator at the University of Greenland, and spoke with practicing teachers in public schools

 

U.S. Fulbright Specialist in Vilnius, Lithuania

Fall 2018 - In collaboration with Vilnius College and four Roma schools or community centers, Dr. Barfield continued her work with Roma cultural integration, creating another tri-lingual children's eBook (English, Lithuanian, and Romani) based on a Roma folktale with student illustrations.  In addition to teacher lesson planning, workshops taught teachers how to develop their own eBooks.

U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Prešov, Slovakia

 Fall 2013 - Dr. Barfield spent 4 months teaching at the University of Prešov in Slovakia.  In addition, she conducted workshops for teachers of English, including students of Roma and Ruthenian ethnicities. Her primary focus was to preserve indigenous culture and integrate culture and content into English language learning.

Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies

 Fall 2009 - Dr. Barfield taught Global Issues in Education at the Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies in the Netherlands.

U.S. Fulbright in Chile, South America

 Fall 2007 - Dr. Barfield spent 4 months in Chile with the Chilean Ministry of Education visiting schools and working with teachers of English.  Her primary focus was to integrate indigenous culture into English language learning.  She worked with Mapuche, Aymara, and Rapa Nui cultures.

Big Horn Teacher and Personnel/Career Ladder Projects:

   Dr. Barfield worked with two Title VII teacher training grants funded through the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) in the U.S. Department of Education. These grants included collaboration between Montana State University Billings (MSUB), Little Big Horn College (LBHC), and five school districts on or near the Crow Reservation. The major goals of these grants were to increase the number of Native American certified teachers, provide services on multiculturalism/ bilingualism/Crow culture to staff in the five school districts, provide week-long Native American Summer Institutes in July, and integrate multiculturalism/bilingualism/Crow culture into general and teacher education courses at MSUB and LBHC.

Big Sky Teacher Projects:

   Dr. Barfield has been the Project Advisor to two teacher training grants funded through the U.S. Department of Education Office of Indian Education (OIE).  The goals, similar to the OELA grants, were to increase American Indian (AI) certified teachers, develop AI Cultural Trunks, and offer Fellows first-year teaching support.  These grants expanded the above grants to include all Montana tribes.
