Clock Town Inn Owner Kicks Off Entrepreneurship Course

Stephen WahrlichStephen C. Wahrlich, the owner/operator of the BEST WESTERN PLUS ClockTower Inn, kicked off the first session of the spring semester course, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Steve began the class by discussing his career trajectory. Raised in Denver, Colorado, Steve graduated from the University of Colorado. He has led numerous companies successfully over his career.  Owner of Wahrlich Enterprises Inc. – a marketing and consulting firm with emphasis in the hospitality industry and Sports Industry, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development – Thomson Corporation – New York, New York where he developed and implemented the sales and marketing programs for electronic publishing, acquisitions and integration of 4 companies, and Sr. Vice President Operations – Pacific Plaza Hotels – Oakland, California.

Steve shared a number of things that he has learned over his career. Among these are:

  • People are very complex
  • Dollars are the common measurement
  • Relationships rule, “communication” drools (communication isn’t what it’s cracked up to be)
  • It is not about me (successful business people are not focused on themselves)
  • Leaders lead (leading is not the same thing as managing)
  • Follow your passion, don’t worry about the money
  • Have fun
  • Work for a large organization before a small organization
  • Ask for the business
  • Embrace change
  • Don’t be afraid of “smarter” people
  • Ask yourself, “how much better could can we do” (don’t settle for mediocrity)

Summing up his attitude toward managing, he said, “I love to see people grow.”

Steve has re-developed and re-positioned 126 unit full service property; and is the property manager for 10 lofts in downtown Billings.  Highly active in the hospitality industry, Steve is a member of the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s Technology & E-Business Committee, current Past President of the Downtown Billings Partnership and Downtown Business Improvement District (BID),  Chairperson of the Billings Tourism Business Improvement District (TBID), Board Member of the Montana Lodging and Hospitality Association, Montana State University – Billings Foundation, Riverstone Health, Riverstone Health Foundation and CO-Director of the Montana Special Olympics.
