Graduate Athletic Training  Introduction

Presently (March. 2007), the athletic training education program at MSUB was recommended for Initial Accreditation by the  Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Programs (CAATE). Students are eligible to sit for the BOC examination.

An Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a qualified allied health care professional educated and experienced in the management of health care related to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients injuries.  The athletic training program within the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) educates future ATC's leading to eligibility to sit for the  Board of Certification Examination for the student who successfully completes the program.  This program is a pre-certification program and is not intended for students with an undergraduate degree in athletic training.  ATC's may consider the MSU-B Sports, Recreation and Fitness Management Program.

This is a competitive program and requires admission to the Graduate School, and the Athletic Training Program. Students should have an Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Students must apply for admission to the Graduate College including a $40.00 application fee. Applications for Graduate School may be obtained from the MSUB, Office of Graduate Studies and Research.  or ONLINE: Application It is desirable to have an undergraduate degree in a related field, such as exercise physiology, health or human performance; however, it is not mandatory.  The following courses or their equivalents should have been successfully completed with a grade of C or better.

The deficiencies/ prerequisites may be fulfilled during the program and are in addition to the curriculum listed below?

MSU-Billings (or equivalent) Prerequisites

BIOL 241/243/245/246 Human Physiology and Anatomy I and II and Labs
HHP 430 Exercise Physiology
HHP 463 Kinesiology and Biomechanics

Students must also show proof of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid Certification prior to starting clinical experiences.  Students are required to maintain these certifications throughout the entire academic program.  The prerequisite courses and the basic certification requirements are a necessary basis upon which the educational program builds.

This is a full‑time graduate program and requires on summer session plus two years of clinical experience as part of the requirements for graduation.

Most of the clinical hours are obtained between the hours of 1:00-6:00 P.M.  Students will be expected to obtain at least 20 hours per week of clinical experience. 

Clinical experience does include some nights, weekends and travel.  Clinical experience must be obtained over a minimum of four academic year semesters. Students will be evaluated each semester on academic and clinical performance.  Failure to meet standards may result in probation, suspension or dismissal from the athletic training program.

Proof of physical examination and vaccinations is required prior to admission.  Once admitted to the Athletic Training Program, the student will obtain most of the clinical hours as part of course requirements.   

Additional hours will be necessary to complete the educational competencies and qualify for the Board of Certification examination.
