Master of Science in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling

The Montana State University Billings program in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling leads to a Master of Science in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling degree. The program balances theoretical and field-based practical experience. (see information on internships offered through Career Services & Co-op Ed Program) The Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling curriculum is focused on preparing professionals for employment in rehabilitation and mental health settings. Graduates have found employment in state and private rehabilitation offices, mental health centers, supported employment programs, Veterans Administration, community-based vocational programs, hospitals, chemical dependency programs, schools, centers of independent living, insurance companies, manufacturing firms, and other commercial and nonprofit organizations The program is designed to prepare graduates to be eligible for national certification through the Commission for Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRC) and state licensure as professional counselors (LCPC).

Graduates of will demonstrate high standards of preparation in the following areas:

Professional Orientation and Ethics
Counseling Theories, Techniques and Intervention Strategies
Human Growth and Development
Group and Family Counseling
Social and Cultural Foundations
Career and Lifestyle Development
Research and Program Evaluation

LPC Interest

Many students are interested in pursuing a license as a professional counselor (LCPC) following degree completion. Students are encouraged to attend LCPC workshops sponsored by the faculty.  Complete information concerning licensing requirements should be obtained from the Board of Social Work Examiners and Professional Counselors.  Students are reminded that application for a license and coursework selection for a license is their responsibility. 

How to Apply

Individuals must submit a com­pleted application form, as well as a non-refundable $40 admission fee. No fee is required for former MSU-­Billings graduate students seeking re­admission.

Admission to the program is based on the following criteria:

  1. Two copies of official transcripts from all previous institutions;
  2. un­dergraduate GPA of 3.0+
  3. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination test (GRE)
  4. An interview with a faculty member
  5. hree letters of recommendation outlining applicant's academic record, abilities and potential

Acceptance of an approved Plan of Study will constitute formal admission to the Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Program.  A Plan of Study can be submitted when the student has completed either of the following options:

Option 1

Successful completion (earning no less than a "B") in each of the following courses:

EDF 501 Research Design & Interpretation
REHA 506 Practicum: Counseling & Therapy Techniques
            OR
EDF 530 Advanced Human Development & Learning
REHA 507 Ethical & Professional Issues for Counselors & Family Therapists

Option 2

Successful completion (earning no less than a "B") in each of the following courses:

REHA 505 Theories of Counseling
REHA 506 Practicum: Counseling & Therapy Techniques
            OR
EDF 530 Advanced Human Development & Learning
REHA 507 Ethical & Professional Issues for Counselors & Family Therapists
REHA 508 Practicum: Multicultural & Gender Issues in Counseling & Family Therapy
            OR
REHA 504 Career & Lifestyle Development
