Week in Review

The Yellowjackets posted a dominating 7-1 win over Jamestown College on Saturday before laying out a 2-0 shutout victory over conference rival Seattle Pacific on Monday to wrap up the home schedule.

Setting a new school record for fastest goal scored from the start of a game, Jarred Weisen (Great Falls) found the net just 19 seconds into the contest to score his first of three goals in the game to open the Yellowjackets' Senior Day at the College of Technology.

The Yellowjackets scored four first half goals starting with Weisen, a sophomore midfielder, who took a through ball up the right side firing on goal as the Jimmies’ keeper was drawn out of the net.  Chris Andre (Billings) earned the assist.  Andre then took his turn on goal at the 17:58 mark after receiving a pass from teammate Matt D’Hont (Rapid City, S.D.).  D’Hont flicked the ball over the Jimmies’ defense setting up Andre to beat the keeper one on one.

D’Hont scored his third goal of the season off one of Scott Dixon’s (Dorset, England) three assists in the game in the 26th minute.  Weisen scored back-to back goals in the 39th and 49th minutes to wrap up his hat-trick.  Both goals were assisted by Dixon.

Bryce Ramsey and Colby Vossler, both from Cheyenne, Wyo., scored their first goals of the season to open the second half.  Ramsey scored at 69:08 off Brian Huskey’s (Billings) free kick from midfield, while Vossler sheered the ball into the net off a pass from D’Hont.

The Jackets narrowly missed earning their eighth shutout of the season, allowing the Jimmies’ Bradley Wolbert to score with just 3:17 remaining on the game clock.  The Yellowjackets’ Dylan Malloy (Butte) made a diving save only to have Wolbert pick up his own rebound to score.

The Yellowjackets blasted the Jimmies, out-shooting the young program 28-8.  The Jackets also fired 16 shots on goal to Jamestown’s six.  Philip Nisbett made six saves in the first half with his teammate Stephan Shoemaker tackling three in the second half.  All three Yellowjacket keepers saw time in goal.  Sander Tollefson (Missoula) picked up the win and made two first half saves.  Malloy grabbed two saves and Matt Mitchell (Thornton, Colo.) had one.

Sam Charles

Chris Cornish

The Jackets were emotionally charged heading into Monday's GNAC game against Seattle Pacific University as a win would prime the team for its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.  Not disappointing a single Yellowjacket fan, MSU Billings scored two second half goals to finish the season at home 8-0-0.

On a day that would rival Chicago’s nickname of the windy city, both the Yellowjackets and Falcons battled through 45 minutes, taking a scoreless tie into halftime.  Midway into the second half, the Yellowjackets worked the ball into Falcon territory where Sam Charles (Weymouth, England) drew a foul inside the Seattle Pacific box.  Remaining perfect in penalty kick shots, Charles sank the ball into the Falcon’s net at the 59-minute mark to score the game-winner.  Charles is 6-for-6 in PK’s this season and the goal was his conference-leading 19th of the season.

Sensing the urgency, the Falcons tried to turn the momentum into their favor, but the Jackets held steady, continuing to pressure Seattle Pacific’s defense.  In the 67th minute, the duo of Scott Dixon (Dorset, England) and Charles raced up the left side passing the ball back and forth.  Charles took a shot with the Falcons’ keeper Kellen Rosten making a soft save.  A streaking Chris Cornish (Surrey, England) followed through on the rebound pushing the ball into the net just out of Rosten’s reach.  The insurance goal was Cornish’s first of the season with Charles picking up the assist.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Falcons 13-8 and held an 8-3 shots on goal advantage.  Rosten tackled six saves in the game with the Jackets’ Sander Tollefson (Missoula, MT) making three.

The Yellowjackets are currently ranked fourth in the NCAA regional rankings that were released Tuesday.  The ranking does not reflect Monday's win over SPU.  The selection show on November 5th could send the Yellowjackets to their first ever NCAA Tournament.  Seattle University, Sonoma State, and Cal State Dominguez Hills are currently ranked in front of the Yellowjackets with Grand Canyon and Western Washington on the Jackets' heels.
