Week in Review

The Yellowjackets picked up a commanding 5-1 win over visiting Colorado Christian Saturday at the College of Technology to improve to 8-2-1, 3-2-1.  After a roller coaster of a week in Washington the week before featuring a 1-1 tie against No. 4 nationally-ranked Seattle Pacific, a 3-0 loss to Western Washington University, and a 1-0 overtime loss to No. 15 nationally-ranked Seattle University, the Jackets were happy to return home to Billings to host the Cougars in non-conference action.

Saturday's victory marked a school-record eight wins, the most for any men's soccer team in the program's 12-year history.  Colorado Christians' Taylor Shade scored off a corner kick in the 18th minute to put the Cougars up 1-0.  Eight minutes later Justin Hoskins (Billings) scored his first goal of the season off a rebound shot from his teammate Jarred Weisen (Great Falls) to knot the game at one apiece.

It was a Yellowjackets' scoring clinic from that point forward.  MSUB's Sam Charles (Weymouth, England) scored the Jackets' go-ahead goal off a penalty kick in the 40th minute.  With just four seconds remaining in the first half, Chris Andre (Billings) put the Jackets up by two off an assist by Weisen.  Jeremy DeHerrera (Kalispell) and Charles added goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes to ice the win.

Weisen's three assists in the game set the school record for assists in a single game, while Charles has posted four multi-goal games this season including his two in the win over the Cougars.  Charles has scored 14 goals this season and is just one goal shy of tying the school record of 15 set by Dave Austin during the 1998 season.  Charles will likely surpass the record sometime this week.

As a team the Yellowjackets control the conference statistical standings ranking first in shots (165), points (65), goals (24), goals per game (2.18), and shutouts (6).  Individually Charles in ranked first in shots (51), shots per game (51), points (29), points per game (2.64), goals (14,  goals per game (1.27), and game-winning goals (5).  Scott Dixon (Dorset, England) ranks first in assists (5), and assists per game (0.71) while ranking fourth in shots per game (2.57).  Andre has made his mark in the GNAC as a freshman ranking in the top 10 in six different categories.  In goal, Sander Tollefson (Missoula) leads the race for shutouts with five.  Tollefson also ranks third in goals against average (0.70), and saves (27).
 

AROUND THE GNAC:  Cascio moved into 10th place on the GNAC career point list and into sixth on the career goal list with 52 and 23, respectively, with his three goals.  Cascio played most of his first two seasons with the Redhawks in more of a defensive role and had only  two goals in 41 games.  But, since moving to forward he has scored 21 goals in 29 contests. . .Emerson DeOliveira (1 save) and Jordan Jennings (2 saves) each had shutouts in SU’s two wins, but needed to make just three saves between them.  On the season, DeOliveira has four shutouts and Jennings has two. . .Gibson Bardsley and Matt Pele each had a goal and an assist as Western Washington won a pair of games.  Five different players had goals in the two contests.  Michael Lockwood had 10 saves in earning a pair of wins. . .Sam Charles had two goals and Jarred Weisen had three assists in Montana State Billings’ 5-1 win over Colorado Christian.  With his 13th and 14th goals on the season, Charles is already 24th on the GNAC Career Scoring chart in MSUB’s first season in the conference. . .Weisen is the seventh GNAC player to record three assists in a game.  Last year  Dustin Allbery of Seattle   had four against Chaminade.  No player has had more than two in a conference contest. . .Seattle University and Western Washington each have won their last three contests.  Seattle Pacific is winless in its last six starts, losing twice after battling to four consecutive 1-1 draws.  Saint Martin’s has lost six straight.  Chase Franklin scored SMU’s lone goal in its loss to Western Washington.

GNAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Jason Cascio, Seattle University (F, 5-11, Sr., Gilbert, AZ - Hamilton)  scored all three of the Redhawk goals in wins over Montana State Billings (1-0) and UC San Diego (2-0).  The goal against the Yellowjackets came in overtime.  Cascio, who led the GNAC with 16 goals last season, has five so far this season.

NCAA Division II Far West Regional – The first poll will be released Oct. 9 by 1:30 p.m.  Polls will also be released on Oct. 16, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30.

Upcoming Opponents

Saint Martin's (webpage) -  Saint Martin's has seen its share of struggles this season as any inaugural program is expected to.  The Saints are 2-9-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the GNAC standings and will play Seattle University on October 1, before hosting the Yellowjackets on October 4. 

The Saints are trying to break a six-game losing streak with their two wins coming early in the season against Hawaii-Hilo (2-1) and Notre Dame de Namur (1-0).  Eight of nine of the Saints' losses have been by shutout including the Jackets 2-0 win over the Saints back on September 16th in Billings.

Daniel Palermo, Jacob Dupuis, Chris Laise, and Chase Franklin have each scored a goal for the Saints cause.  Other than Franklin's goal against Western Washington on September 29, it had been a month since Saint Martin's has put a ball into the net.  The Saints have been outscored 32-4 and have been outshot 188-86.  Zac Lubin has been the Saints main stake in goal recording 54 saves, ranking second in the conference, for a 2.42 goals against average.

These two teams last met September 16, 2007.  The Jackets won 2-0 in Billings.

Simon Fraser (webpage) - Simon Fraser, a powerful NAIA program with multiple championship games to their credit, are set to host the Yellowjackets on October 6, following a game against Trinity Western University on October 2.  The Clan is boasting a 8-1-1 overall record and are on a four-game winning streak.  In their most recent game against Northwest University, the Clan dominated posting a 6-0 score; making it their seventh shutout win of the season.

Thirteen of the 21 players on the Clan's roster has posted goals in Simon Fraser's balanced attack.  Lucas Barrett leads the team with three goals.  Justin Carvery has two goals and five assists for a team-leading nine points.  In goal, Thomas Lindley has seen 776 of the team's 901 minutes in goal and has allowed just three goals for a 0.35 goals against average.  Lindley has made 17 saves for the Clan.

As a team, Simon Fraser has outscored their opponents 20-3 and hold a 139-65 shots advantage.

Schedule & Results

The Coaches

Dan McNally, Head Coach
The 2007 season will be Dan McNally's third as the head men's soccer coach at MSU Billings.  His teams are 10-24-2 overall in two seasons.  In 2005-2006 the Yellowjackets had their best success in the classroom with the men's soccer program leading the Heartland Conference with a 3.32 grade point average.

Assistant Coach Adam Spinelli
2007-2008 will be Spinelli's second year as the Yellowjackets' men's soccer assistant.  He graduated from Nova Southeastern University with degrees in Business Administration and Sports and Recreation Management.  He was a three-year college starter, playing two seasons at Southern New Hampshire University and one at Nova Southeastern. 

In 2002 at Southern New Hampshire, Spinelli was named the Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year.  He earned third team all-conference honors and was a starter for the Penmen in the NCAA Division II National Championship Game.  At Nova Southeastern Spinelli was named to the All-South Region Academic Team and was an Academic All-America Nominee. 

Spinelli currently holds a USSF National “C” license and a NSCAA National Goalkeeping license.
