Lady Jackets Tie Vikings, 2-2

Box Score
   MSUB Season Stats

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University used a goal in the final minute of play to force the Montana State Billings women’s soccer team into double overtime Thursday resulting in a 2-2 tie after 110:00 minutes of play.  The Lady Jackets are 5-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play.  The Vikings record matches the Jackets at 5-2-1 overall, while they are 1-2-1 in the GNAC.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the halftime after Danielle Ritter (Great Falls) and Mandy Ploskonka (Federal Way, Wash.) scored for MSUB.  Ritter scored an unassisted goal at the 34:58 mark when she took a loose ball and chipped it over the Vikings’ keeper from 10 yards.  With less than one minute left in the half, Ploskonka scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Melissa Carlson (Renton, Wash.) and Brittney Sandau (Billings).

Held scoreless through the first 68 minutes, Western Washington’s Claire Morgan narrowed the gap on a through ball from teammates Amanda Font and Shelby Marcell.  As time winded down, the Yellowjackets suffered a heart-breaker as the Vikings’ Rosie Zadra tied the game with 49 seconds left in regulation.  Zadra put the ball into the Jackets’ net from 30 yards off a pass in front of the goal from Kasey Hostetler.

Both teams battled through double overtime with Western Washington out-shooting the Jackets 13-1 in overtime.  Overall, the Yellowjackets were outshot 31-8 with the Vikings holding an 11-6 shots on goal advantage.

“Anytime you can get a point on the road you have to be pleased,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham.  “The team showed a lot of character in not getting down after Western Washington tied the game.  To be able to fight for 20 minutes and compete to a tie, especially in a conference game, that says a lot about our team.”

Brittany Knudtzon (Kent, Wash.) was steadfast in goal for 90:00 making seven saves.  Jordan Fenwick (Boise, Idaho) stepped into the net for overtime and tackled two saves in the effort.  The Vikings’ Teresa Fish recorded four saves in the game.

The Lady Jackets travel to Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington University (3-4-2, 0-2-0) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday, Sept. 22.  Game time is 11 a.m.
