Softball Steps Out of Conference Play for the Week

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings softball team begins a stretch where the next 14 games are away from Cenex Stadium.  The Yellowjackets open the road trip with a doubleheader at University of Mary on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and conclude the week with a doubleheader at Great Falls on Saturday at 1 p.m.  MSUB stands at 12-15 on the year and 4-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.                                         

The Yellowjackets have had the last 13 days off as a doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene was postponed due to snow Mar. 22.  It will be made up in Nampa, Idaho, Friday, Apr. 11 prior to the original series on the 12th. 

Prior to the break, the Jackets had been quite hot, winning six straight, including conference sweeps of Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon to even their record in the conference at 4-4.

Leading the way for the Jackets this season is Terina Stacks who is hitting a team-best .361.  She leads the team in hits (30), total bases (44), slugging percentage (.530), on-base percentage (.407) and is a perfect 4 of 4 in stolen bases.  She ranks second on the team in home runs with three and in doubles with five.  Defensively, she has 175 putouts, eight assists and no errors on the year.  Stacks earned GNAC Player of the Week honors earlier this season.   

In the circle, Rebekah Tsatsa has come on as of late with a team-best 2.99 ERA and a 7-6 record.  She has made 16 appearances and has 12 starts with nine complete games.  Tsatsa leads the squad in innings pitched with 84.1 and has a team-high 61 strikeouts.  Opponents are hitting just .253 against her.

The Mary Marauders enter the week with a 14-18 record and have dropped four-straight and five of six.  Leading the way for the Marauders is Dre Brunskill who is hitting a team-best .404 on the year in 31 games.  She leads the team in hits (44), home runs (6), RBI (38), total bases (69), slugging percentage (.633) and has a team-low three strikeouts on the year.

On the mound, the Marauders are led by Ashley Watson who is 7-6 on the year with a team-best 3.06 ERA.  Watson has played n 16 games with 14 starts and nine complete games.  She leads the team with 89.1 innings pitched and has a team-high 42 punchouts.  Opponents are hitting .266 against her. 

The last time Mary and the Yellowjackets met, the Marauders swept a doubleheader at Cenex Stadium in the 2008 home opener for MSUB, 4-3 and 4-3, Mar. 12.  MSUB hasn’t lost since that doubleheader.  Mary leads the all-time series 4-0.

University of Great Falls enters the week with a 10-7 record and hasn’t played since Mar. 21 in a doubleheader split with Northwest Nazarene.  The Argos are led by Joe Bailey who is hitting a team-high .520 on the year.  She is slugging .900 and has a team-best 26 hits.  Bailey also leads the team in home runs with five and is second in RBIs with 16. 

In the circle, the Argos are led by Sarah De Vore with a 5-3 record in 12 appearances.  She has a 5.35 ERA in 36.2 innings of work.  Lindsay Cline leads the team with a 5.12 ERA and a 3-1 record in seven games. 

In the last meeting, the Yellowjackets posted a 9-0 victory in five innings over the Argos Mar. 19.  In that game, Shay Oberg led the way going 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBI including a home run.  Jessica Frank went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBI and also had a home run.  Lisa Moore pitched a complete game two-hitter and had eight strikeouts for the Yellowjackets. It was the second shutout of the season for MSUB. 

MSUB leads the all-time series 5-0 and 2-0 in Great Falls.
