Yellowjackets Drop Two at Leadoff Classic (2/15/07)
Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

PHOENIX, AZ – The Montana State-Billings softball team lost its opening games of the Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic on Thursday.  The Jackets fell to Minnesota State-Mankato 8-1 in their first game and lost to Angelo State 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

After a season-opening split with Western New Mexico on Sunday, the Yellowjackets have dropped six-straight games to fall to 1-7.  They will play Cal State-Bakersfield (4-2) Friday morning at 11:00 at the Leadoff Classic.  Teams will be seeded in three double elimination brackets with bracket play starting Friday afternoon and running through Saturday.

In the Jackets’ early game against Minnesota State-Mankato, the Mavericks’ Brooke McKelvogue and Samantha Rohr combined for a two-hitter.  The Yellowjackets managed just a single apiece from Jessica Frank (Great Falls, MT) and Mandy Schaapveld (Puyallup, WA).  The Mustangs built a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings.  The Jackets’ lone run came in the bottom of the third when Schaapveld singled, stole second, stole third, and scored on a sac fly by Stephanie Rinehart (Gig Harbor, WA).  Schaapveld was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases.

The Jackets’ Lindsey Trenary (Helena, MT) went the distance in her second collegiate start.  She was battered for 15 hits and eight earned runs in seven innings to fall to 0-1.  The Mavericks had five extra base hits.  Kari Hudson was 3-for-3 with a home run.  She drove in four RBI and scored twice.  Abby Wagner also scored twice, and Katie Reed drove in two runs.  Minnesota State later beat Cal State-Bakersfield to improve to 2-0.

In the late game, Angelo State’s Kari Galm no-hit the Yellowjackets to improve to 6-1 on the season.  Rebekah Tsatsa (Eagle, ID) pitched all five innings for MSUB, giving up six hits and eight runs.  Complete stats are not yet available for the game.  Angelo State, ranked ninth in the nation, improved to 14-2 with their win over the Yellowjackets following an 8-2 loss to Cal State-Bakersfield earlier in the day.  Of the Rambelles’ 14 wins this season, seven have been by the eight-run rule.  Two of their eight-run wins came against defending Heartland Conference champion Incarnate Word.
