Lady Jackets Survive Marauders in OT (10/2/05)
Box Score

BISMARCK, ND – A pair of Ally Stroup goals, including the game winner in overtime, were the difference Sunday as the Montana State-Billings women’s soccer team escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory at University of Mary.  The win improved the Yellowjackets to 7-2-1 overall.  Mary fell to 3-7-1.

“It’s always tough to win on the road,” said Yellowjacket coach Don Trentham.  “For first time this year we were down at halftime.  For a team facing adversity on road, we battled back to get to overtime and win, so I’m pretty proud of them.”

The Yellowjackets drew first blood just 17 minutes into the contest when Stroup (Jr., Ojai, CA) sent a through ball to Brittney Sandau (So., Billings, MT).  Sandau found the net for her sixth goal of the season.  The Marauders responded with two goals just before halftime to take a 2-1 lead.  Amanda Schreiber scored in the 41st minute, and Shanda Lester hit the go-ahead goal with just two minutes left in the half.

Yellowjacket goalkeeper Megan Plank (Jr., Phoenix, AZ) made three saves while allowing the two goals in the first half.  She was replaced at the half by redshirt freshman Anita Renemans (Casper, WY) in a substitution that was planned before the game started.  Because the Yellowjackets trailed when Renemans entered the game, she was credited with the victory in goal, the first of her career.  She made one save in the second half.

“Earlier in the week we made the decision to let Anita have the second half to give her some experience,” said Trentham.  “She kind of got thrown into the pressure cooker with us down 2-1.  But she did a good job in the second half and overtime to pick up her first collegiate win.”

Stroup saved the day with two goals in less than 10 minutes.  In the 85th minute she dribbled past a defender to the 18 yard box, firing a shot into the left corner of the goal.  Stroup’s sixth goal of the year tied the game at 2-2 and forced overtime.

In the extra period, Mandy Ploskonka (Fr., Federal Way, WA) sent a pass over the defense to Stroup in the box.  Stroup fired from close range, but the shot was saved by Marauders goalkeeper Brannigan Coyle.  Stroup corralled the rebound and fired again, this time from about six yards, past a mass of defenders in front of the net for the game winner 4:27 into overtime.

“On the last goal Mandy sent the ball over the defense to me,” said Stroup.  “I shot and it bounced off the goalie. Everybody was fighting for it.  Somehow I ended up with it and shot.”

“We beat them 2-0 earlier in the year,” added Stoup.  “It’s always hard to beat a team twice in a season.  We did a good job taking their players on in the second half.  They were getting tired.  We didn’t have a lot of opportunities to score in the beginning of the game.  We just kept taking them on to get more opportunities to tie the game and win in overtime.”

The Yellowjackets return home to host Dallas Baptist on Thursday, October 6.  Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m. at the MSU Billings College of Technology.  The Jackets will be defending a 15-game home unbeaten streak.
