Yellowjackets Fall at Trinity, Wait for Rita to Pass (9/23/05)

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Montana
State-Billings men’s soccer team has avoided Hurricane Rita so
far on its trip to Texas, but the Yellowjackets ran into a
storm Friday night on the field losing to Trinity College,
4-1. The Tigers entered the game with a 67-game regular
season unbeaten streak. The 2003 NCAA Division III National
Champions last lost a regular season game on October 19, 2001
and have led Division III in scoring the past five seasons.
“That’s the best team we’ve played all
year,” said Yellowjacket head coach Dan McNally. “They were
absolutely outstanding. Tonight we simply came up against the
best team we have played all year. The guys worked very, very
hard for 90 minutes. The enthusiasm and commitment from the
MSU Billings players was very good.”
Trinity, currently ranked third
nationally in Division III, opened the scoring on a Josh
Greenleaf penalty kick at 14:40. The Yellowjackets answered
20 minutes later when Matt
D’Hont (So., Rapid City, SD) scored on a header after
taking a cross from Jesse Spann (Sr., Rock Springs, WY). It was D’Hont’s
first goal and Spann’s first assist of the season.
Trinity broke the 1-1 halftime tie just
five minutes into the second half when Tyrone Potrakis found
the goal. The Tigers added a Patrick Floeck goal in the 50th minute and another Greenleaf goal with just 24 seconds
remaining for the final margin.
The Tigers out-shot the Yellowjackets a
total of 32-4 in the game. Trinity had 16 shots on goal to
the Jackets’ one. MSU Billings goalkeeper Jess Feldtman (Sr., Lander, WY) played a solid game
against the barrage of shots, making a dozen saves.
The loss dropped the Yellowjackets to
2-7-0 on the season. The Tigers remained unbeaten at 6-0-0,
improving their regular season streak to 66-0-2. MSU Billings
is scheduled to play at St. Edward’s University in Austin at
1:00 p.m. on Sunday, but the status of the game is in question
due to Hurricane Rita. If Austin avoids the heavy rains that
could make the field unplayable, the game could still go off
at 1:00 or be moved to 5:00 p.m. If the game cannot be played
Sunday, the teams will try to make up the game at 11:00 a.m.
Monday. The Yellowjackets then return to San Antonio to face
St. Mary’s University on Tuesday. |
