Jackets’ Munoz, Hughes Lead Nation (1/5/06)

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings guards Cameron Munoz and Carlin Hughes are among the national leaders in the first NCAA Division II statistical rankings of the year.  Munoz leads the nation in both scoring and 3-point shooting while Hughes is tops in the country for assists.

Munoz, a 6-foot-3 senior guard from Chino, CA, was averaging 27.3 points and 6.0 made 3-pointers per game through the ranking period that ended January 3.  He leads all NCAA Division II players in both categories.  He also ranks tenth nationally for 3-point percentage at 48.8 percent.  In Wednesday night’s win over Western New Mexico, Munoz made seven 3-pointers and scored 29 points.  He moved up to fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,488 points and could become just the fifth player in school history with over 1,500 points when the Jackets play on Friday.

Hughes was averaging 10.6 assists per game through the first NCAA ranking period.  The 6-1 sophomore from Perth, Australia, also ranked 26th nationally for steals per game at 2.7.  He scored a career-high 33 points with 10 assists in Wednesday’s win.

Seniors Buddy Windy Boy and Moritz Wohlers are also among national stats leaders.  Windy Boy, a senior guard from Lodge Grass, MT, is fifth in the nation for made 3-pointers per game at 3.9.  Wohlers, a senior center from Wolfenbuttel, Germany, is 28th for rebounding, averaging 9.1 rebounds per game.

As a team the Yellowjackets lead the nation in 3-point shooting and rank second for scoring.  They were averaging 101.1 points and 13.7 made 3-pointers per game at the time of the rankings.  The Jackets scored 122 points and made 16 threes on Wednesday.  They also rank 11th for 3-point percentage (42.5), 22nd for scoring margin (15.1), and 30th for field goal percentage (49.0).

MSU Billings, 6-2 overall and 1-0 in Heartland Conference play, will be in action again Friday when they host Oklahoma Panhandle State in a conference game.  Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Alterowitz Gym.  The same teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
