Munoz Named Heartland Player of the Week (2/7/06)

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings senior guard Cameron Munoz has been named the Heartland Conference player of the week by the league office.  The award is Munoz’s third of the season and the seventh conference player of the week honor for an MSU Billings player this season.

Munoz averaged 25.0 points and 6.5 made 3-pointers a game to lead MSU Billings to a pair of wins over Lincoln.  On Friday he scored 19 points and dished out six assists as the Yellowjackets won 128-82 to remain unbeaten in the Heartland Conference at 7-0.  In Saturday’s 99-85 non-conference win over the Blue Tigers, Munoz scored a game-high 31, hitting 8-of-15 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

For the week Munoz was 13-of-27 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the line.  He also had seven assists and three steals.  With his fourth 3-pointer on Saturday Munoz became just sixth player in NCAA Division II history to make 400 career 3-pointers.  Munoz’s 404 career 3-pointers currently tie him for fifth all-time in Division II history.  With eight regular season games remaining, Munoz is 39 three-pointers short of the all-time DII record of 443 set last year by Stephen Dye of Alderson-Broaddus.  Munoz currently ranks first in the Heartland for scoring, first for 3-point percentage, first for 3-pointers per game, second for free throw percentage, and tenth for field goal percentage.

The Yellowjackets travel to Austin, Tex., this week for two important games against St. Edward’s University.  The Jackets and Hilltoppers will play a critical Heartland Conference game on Friday with first place in the league on the line.  They will meet again in a non-conference game on Saturday.  Both games are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. MST and will be aired on AM 970 in Billings and on the internet at www.msubillings.edu/athletics.
