BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State University women’s soccer team continued the strong start to its season by defeating Savannah College of Art and Design, 3-1, on Sunday.  Both Alyssa Wolfer (So., F., Longmont, CO ) and Brittney Sandau (Fr., MF, Billings, MT) assisted Margot Merrill-Johnson (Sr., MF, Salt Lake City ) on two separate goals, including the game winner.  The win puts the Lady Jackets at 4-0-1 on the season, tying the school record unbeaten streak at five games.

Merrill-Johnson scored two goals within the first 17 minutes of the game.  The first goal came at just 3:31 when Sandau crossed the ball in front of the goal where Wolfer headed it to Merrill-Johnson for the score.  The second goal of the first half came in the seventeenth minute when Sandau again crossed to Wolfer, who deflected the ball to Merrill-Johnson for the score.

The only goal from Savannah College came at 23:40 from the top of the 18 yard box, pulling the Bees to within 2-1 at the break.  The final goal of the game came from Abby Bennett (Fr., MF, Livingston, MT ), who found the net as time expired for her first collegiate goal.  Jenny Moellendorf (So., F, Green River, WY) assisted on the goal. 

Megan Plank (So., GK, Phoenix, AZ) said that she knew Savannah College would be tough and that the team assumed that Savannah would play hard after losing its previous game to Carroll College.  “We did a good job defending and this year the team has made an overall improvement.  We play together better and know where we want to put the ball.” 

Sandau said, “I’m getting used to my role as an outside midfielder, and I’m just trying to make the runs I’m supposed to.  I think our team is confident with our wins.  We know we need to improve because both Rocky Mountain College and Central Washington will be tough this week.”

Coach Don Trentham said, “This type of game is what I expected and I am pleased with the midfield and the opportunities they created.  I was also happy with our bench today.  One of the keys was for everyone to play so that we are rested and injury free for Tuesday’s game against Rocky.”
