Jackets Struggle to Twenty-First at
Grand Canyon Invitational (Mar. 29, 2005)

PHOENIX, AZ-  The Montana State University-Billings women’s golf team shot their way to twenty-first place in the team competition of the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational with rounds of 367 and 392 for a combined 759.

Moving up two spots from day one and taking top honors in the team competition is Western Washington University.  The Vikings, ranked No. 11 nationally in the National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA II top 25 shot a 313 in the first 18-holes and finished the final 18-holes with a tournament low round of 310 to combine for 623.  Just one stroke back and shooting a 312 in both rounds is Western New Mexico placing second with a 624 after 36-holes.  Placing third in the team competition is Drury University who held the lead over Western Washington and Western New Mexico after day one.  Drury shot a first round 311 and finished out the tournament with a round of 320 for a combined 631. 

Western Washington took top honors in the individual competition as well.  Katja Trygg shot a 74 on day one of play and a one under par, 71 in day two for a combined 145.  Two strokes back and claiming second is West Texas A&M’s Meredith Easley who shot a 78 in the first 18, and a tournament low round 69 on day two for a combined 147.  Rounds of 74 and 77 earned Kim Cammer of Western New Mexico third place in the individual standings with a total of 151.  Lady Jacket Halley Montalban (Fr., Billings, MT) ended the tournament tied for seventy-seventh with rounds 88 and 88 for a combined 176.  Teammate Amanda Rabenberg (Jr., Livingston, MT) shot rounds of 93 and 99 for a 192 and a tie for ninety-fifth.

The Lady Jackets will return to Billings and compete against Rocky Mountain College in the Billings Collegiate Cup April 4-5 at the Jackets' home course of Briarwood.
