MSU Billings Hires New Women’s Golf Coach (Sept. 20, 2004)

BILLINGS, MT – Montana State-Billings Athletics Director Dr. Gary Gray announced Monday that Jay Marschall has been hired as the school’s new head women’s golf coach.  Marschall will begin immediately.

“We’re happy to have Jay accept our offer, and we think he’ll do an outstanding job,” said Gray.  “He has a wide range of abilities and experience that everyone on the search committee felt would be valuable.”

Marschall will coach the women’s team and Roger Burckley will continue to coach the men’s team.  Burckley is in his second season with the Yellowjackets.  Because most NCAA golf tournaments do not play men and women on the same weekend, the teams often travel to different locations.  After both programs developed full schedules, the school’s administration decided that separate coaches for the men and women were necessary because of travel.

Marschall recently moved to Billings from Boston when his wife, Sarah Keller, accepted a position as an assistant professor in Communication Arts at the school.  Since 1994, Marschall has owned and operated Coachjay, Inc.  The business specializes in coaching and training athletes in golf, running, cycling, fitness and triathlon.  From 2002-2004, Marschall also worked as a Triathlon Coordinator and Sports Educator for The Sports Club LA in Boston.

A native of Chicago, Marschall spent time working at the Shoreacres Country Club and Medinah Country Club.  His father, John, was the head golf professional at Medinah for 17 years.  Marschall went on to play golf at Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in business administration.

“My love of golf and my love of coaching make this a great segue into my new life in Billings,” said Marschall.  “I’m looking forward to working with the young people on the team and helping them grow as athletes and as people.”
