Lady Jackets Down Mustangs, 100-63 (Jan. 18, 2005)
Box Score

BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets pull out a second half win over Western New Mexico University, defeating the Mustangs 100-63.  The win puts the Jackets at 12-3 on the season and drops the Mustangs to 5-13.

The Mustangs shot 81 percent from the free throw line and went just 13 for 36 from the field in the first half of play putting them down 35-45 at the half.  The Lady Jackets netted eight 3-pointers with Lisa Jellum shooting 3-3.  The team shot 89 percent from the line and went 39-71 from the field for the game.  The Mustangs didn’t find the net until 14:38 of the second half when Melanie Cleusix broke the streak with a made free throw after being fouled.  The Mustangs turned the ball over 25 times with the Yellowjackets making 11 steals putting the game out of reach for Western New Mexico.

The Mustangs were led by Melanie Cleusix with 19 points followed by teammate Natalie Lara with 11 points.  Four Yellowjackets scored double digit points led by Robyn Milne (Sr., C, Richey, MT) with 17 points.  Teammate Tanya Petersen (Jr., F, Billings, MT) scored 14 points followed by Lisa Jellum (Jr., G, Gillette, WY) scoring 13 points and Jessica Bratton (So., F, Casper, WY) netting 12 points.

The Yellowjackets had a record breaking night with seven of the 12 players beating their personal career highs.  The Jackets also scored 100 points against the Mustangs making it only the eleventh time in school history with a final score in the triple digits.  The last time the Lady Jackets scored in the triple digits was February 19th, 2000 against Seattle University when they defeated the Redhawks 106-63.

“It was a very good team effort tonight,” said Yellowjacket head coach Kevin Woodin.  “Each of our players made a contribution, and I felt the key to the game was the last minute of the first half, as we were able to push the lead to ten points.  Our defense was good and I liked the way we got the ball inside as well.  We rebounded the ball better on both ends of the floor and that allowed us to get some baskets.  We are looking forward to tomorrow night’s game, but know it will be much tougher.”

The Yellowjackets host the Mustangs in game two of the series Wednesday, January 19th at 7:00 P.M. at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
