Lady Jackets Wrap up First Fall Weekend with Pair of Wins (Sept. 19, 2004)

NORTH PLATTE, NE – Power hitting—and a lot of it—highlighted the Montana State-Billings softball team’s first weekend of fall competition.  The Yellowjackets hammered out eight home runs and 27 runs in a pair of wins on Sunday to finish the weekend 4-1.

On Sunday, MSU Billings opened with a 13-2 shellacking of Barton County CC.  Sara Hanley (Sr., Kalispell, MT) opened the floodgates in a six-run first inning with a two-run homer.  Hanley was a first team all-conference selection last spring.  Fellow all-conference player Joey Ehnes (Sr., Great Falls, MT) was 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored in the game.

After scoring twice more in the third, MSU Billings put up five runs in the fourth to win via the eight-run rule.  Freshman Jenna Haacke (Billings, MT) hit her second homer of the weekend, a three-run blast in the fourth, to highlight an impressive collegiate start for the Senior HS grad.

Jordan Waverek (Sr., Kalispell, MT) picked up the win, striking out three in four innings.  Stephanie Cochrun (Sr., Lake Stevens, WA) closed out the game with a scoreless fifth inning.  The two combined to allow six hits.

The Yellowjackets slugged it out with Garden City CC in the second game of the day, winning 14-10.  Layne Pavey (Sr., Spokane, WA) was dominating at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three home runs and six RBI.  Two of her three dingers cleared the 15-foot legion fence of the adjacent field.

Theresa Campbell (Sr., Great Falls, MT) homered twice and Waverek hit her first home run of the weekend to help the Yellowjacket offense.  Rachel Quarnburg (So., Billings, MT) pitched three innings before being relieved by Megan McCrae (Sr., Brandon, Manitoba).  McCrae struck out four in two innings to pick up the win.

MSU Billings was scheduled to face Regis University in the Silver Bracket championship game Sunday afternoon, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.  The Yellowjackets continue the fall season next Saturday and Sunday at the Colorado State Invitational.
