Lady Jackets Take One before Rain Stops Play at UNC (Apr. 21, 2004)
Box Score

GREELEY, CO – The Montana State-Billings softball team defeated Northern Colorado, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon behind a four-hitter from pitcher Joey Ehnes.  The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called during the first inning because of rain.  It will be made up when the Bears visit Billings on May 1 and 2.  The scheduled doubleheader on May 1 will become a tripleheader with games at 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.  The teams will still play one game at 1:00 p.m. on May 2.

Ehnes gave up her only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  Shannon Lamport had a leadoff triple for the Bears and was plated by Whitney Platten’s RBI single to left three batters later.  Ehnes settled down to strike out seven while scattering four hits and one walk over seven innings.  She improved to 17-15 with the victory and lowered her season ERA to 2.13.

Ehnes erased the Bears’ one run lead in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run, her fourth of the season and her team-leading 27th RBI.  The fifth and sixth innings went by scoreless as both teams battled the wind and rain.

Ehnes led off the seventh inning with a walk.  She was put out at second when Stephanie Cochrun reached on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher.  Cochrun advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored the game-winning run when Layne Pavey’s grounder was mishandled by the second baseman.  Ehnes retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.  Cochrun, Ehnes and Aysha Blatter accounted for all three of the Yellowjackets’ hits.

“I thought there would be more offense between these two teams,” said Yellowjackets head coach Jeff Aumend, “but the weather was probably a factor in that.  Cami Rainey hit a ball that I thought had a chance to go out, but the wind was blowing in and held it up.  Joey pitched really well again and obviously had a big home run.”

The Yellowjackets improved to 20-27 with eight games to play.  They will host PacWest opponent BYU-Hawaii on Saturday and Monday.  Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Cenex Stadium.  Monday’s doubleheader will begin at 12 noon.
