Yellowjackets Give Up Leads, Drop Pair to Humboldt State (Mar. 4, 2004)
Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

RICHLAND, WA – Montana State-Billings held leads in both games of a doubleheader against 15th-ranked Humboldt State on Thursday, but lost both games.  The Yellowjackets dropped game one, 6-4 in nine innings, and game two 6-2.  MSUB dropped to 4-12 overall with the losses.  HSU improved to 11-6.

Christy Wankel’s three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning of game one gave the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead that they extended to 4-0 in the fourth inning when Stephanie Cochrun drove in Wankel.  Joey Ehnes pitched six scoreless innings, but gave up four runs in the top of the seventh, including a three-run home run to pinch hitter Victoria Barbaria.

The Lumberjacks plated two runs in the top of the ninth for the win.  Ehnes pitched nine innings, allowing eleven hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.  Hannah Hanes got the win for the Lumberjacks after pitching the final five innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.

In game two, the Jackets struck first with two runs in the top of the first.  Leadoff hitter Joey Ehnes singled and later scored on an RBI sacrifice by Sara Hanley.  Theresa Campbell followed with an RBI single to drive home Stephanie Cochrun.  The singles from Ehnes and Campbell were the only hits of the game for the Yellowjackets.

The Lumberjacks took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first and added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.  Yellowjacket starter Megan McCrae gave up seven hits and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work to take the loss.  She gave up home runs to HSU’s Jessica Pedilla and Andrea Williams.  Jordan Waverek pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief, allowing no hits and two walks.

The Yellowjackets and Lumberjacks will meet again Friday morning in the opening game of the Central Washington Invitational that runs through Sunday.  The Yellowjackets will play at least seven games at the tournament, with potentially more games if they advance to the bracket play.  They will face No. 1-ranked North Dakota State on Saturday.
