Yellowjacket Tennis Teams Lose to Top-Ranked Teams (Apr. 9, 2004)

LAIE, HI – The Montana State-Billings tennis teams met the No. 1-ranked teams in the nation Friday at the PacWest Tennis Championships and were shutout in both matches.  The men’s team fell 8-0 to Hawaii Pacific, and the women’s team lost 9-0 to BYU-Hawaii.

Hawaii Pacific’s men’s team is the defending PacWest champion and finished second at last year’s national tournament.  The Sea Warriors won all six single matches against the Yellowjackets Friday, with MSUB’s only serious challenge coming in the No. 6 spot where the Jackets’ Andres Calabro lost to Phillip Eiseler, 7-6 (6), 6-4.  HPU took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, 8-4.  To keep the tournament on schedule, the match can be called once a team has won five matches.  The Yellowjacket men’s team faces No. 6 seed Chaminade in Saturday’s final match at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time.

The Lady Jackets were no match for the top-ranked Seasiders in the day’s late match, losing 5-0 to the two-time defending national champions.  BYU-Hawaii has won 94 consecutive matches and is favored to capture its third-straight national championship.  MSU Billings managed to win just three games in the six single matches against the Seasiders, and three games in the three doubles matches.  The Lady Yellowjackets face No. 6 seed Western New Mexico in Saturday’s final match at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
