Yellowjackets Host Hawaii Teams in Warm-up for Conference Tourney (April 7, 2003)

BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings men’s and women’s tennis teams will face two Hawaii teams on Tuesday and Wednesday in a tune-up for the April 10-12 PacWest Tennis Championships.  The Yellowjackets will host Hawaii-Hilo on Tuesday and BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday.

The Yellowjackets and Vulcans are scheduled to start at noon on Tuesday.  Hawaii-Hilo’s women’s team is currently ranked No. 22 in the nation and feature Nathalia Jung who is ranked 41st in the country.

MSU Billings will face BYU-Hawaii, the defending national champions, on Wednesday.  The women’s teams are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s matches to follow.  The Seasider women are currently unbeaten this year and ranked No. 1 in the nation.  They captured the school’s first national championship last year and have won 56 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

BYU-Hawaii’s women are led by Adrienn Hegedus, currently the top-ranked singles player in the nation.  Including Hegedus, the Seasiders have four players ranked in the top 50 as well as the 3rd-ranked doubles team.  Judy Weng is No. 7, Jing Sun is No. 14, and Anna Anikova is No. 50 in the singles rankings.  The doubles team of Hegedus and Weng is ranked third.

The BYU-Hawaii men’s team also captured last year’s national title and is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation after building a 21-1 record this season.  The Seasiders’ Jan Krejci is the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country and joins Peter Madarassy on the top-ranked doubles team in the nation.  Madarassy is also ranked 12th in singles.

The Pacific West Conference Championships will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and run through Saturday evening.  There is also a tournament banquet scheduled for Wednesday evening in the MSU Billings SUB ballroom.  All local media are invited to attend.
