Yellowjackets Fall Twice to Western N.M. to Finish Season (May 3, 2003)

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The fifth-ranked Western New Mexico Mustangs defeated MSU Billings 6-1 and 9-2 on Saturday to conclude the regular season for both teams.  Western improved to 52-8 overall and 18-2 in the PacWest.  The Yellowjackets finished with their best record in their brief three-year history at 15-20 overall and 4-16 in the PacWest.

Angela Slaugh, the league’s top pitcher, was in top form in the first game, limiting the Yellowjackets to just three hits in seven innings.  She struck out seven and only allowed one run to improve to 29-4 for the season.  Slaugh was pitching a shutout until Terilee Ehnes’s homerun to right center with two outs in the seventh put the Jackets on the board.  Megan McCrae took the loss to finish her season at 8-12.  Shellie Broyles homered for the third straight game and Rachel Stahle hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

In game two, the Yellowjackets did a good job manufacturing two runs to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.  With two outs in the third, Michelle Falsken drove in Joey Ehnes to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead.  With two outs in the fourth inning, Christy Wankel slid in safely to score from second base when Debbie Yescas mishandled a groundball by Meghan O’Donnell.

MSUB held its 2-0 lead until there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth.  The Mustangs rallied for four runs, highlighted by Danielle Harmon’s two-run triple that plated Yescas and Debbie Browning.  WNMU added two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game away.  Tiffany Mondhink won her 23rd game of the year for the Mustangs, improving to 23-3.  Joey Ehnes took the loss for the Jackets to fall to 7-5.
