Yellowjackets Rally to Complete Sweep of Hawaii-Hilo (April 25, 2003)

BILLINGS, MT – MSU Billings took both ends of a PacWest softball double-header Friday, downing Hawaii-Hilo 6-1 and 4-3 in nine innings.  Megan McCrae earned the win in both games, improver her season record to 8-9.

McCrae scattered eight hits over seven innings in the first game, striking out two while allowing just one run and one walk.  The Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the win.  Theresa Campbell was 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored for MSUB.  Michelle Falsken and Layne Pavey each doubled in the game.  Kristine Kahoalii gave up eight hits and six runs in six innings for the Vulcans, striking out one and walking six.  Leinani Hashida was 2-for-4 at the plate, and Kayla Kahuli drove in a run.

The Vulcans jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game two when Claresa Asuncion and Diana Kim came around to score.  Asuncion was 2-for-4 in the game.  The Yellowjackets tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Sara Hanley and Campbell each scored.

Matching home runs tied the game in the sixth and the game remained tied until the ninth.  Nancy Vega led off the Vulcan sixth with a solo homer off the rock wall in left.  Terilee Ehnes answered for the Yellowjackets in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out dinger to straightaway center.

McCrae, who came on in relief for Joey Ehnes after Ehnes gave up the home run to Vega, battled starter Tara Martinez through the ninth.  The Vulcans were able to put their first two batters of the ninth inning of second and third, but came away empty-handed when McCrae struck out two batters and popped up Kalei Robia to end the rally.

Terilee Ehnes opened the MSUB half of the ninth with a single to left and was sacrificed to second by Stephanie Cochrun.  After a fly out and a walk, Meghan O’Donnell slapped a single to shallow right field that plated Ehnes for the winning run.  The Yellowjackets improved to 14-15 overall and 5-9 in the PacWest.  The Vulcans fell to 26-17, 11-7.  The same teams will play Saturday at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. at Cenex Stadium in the Yellowjackets’ final home games of the season and the Vulcans final two contests of 2003.
