Yellowjacket Softball Team Splits Double-Header at Dawson (April 17, 2003)

GLENDIVE, MT – The MSU Billings softball team faced Dawson Community College in a split squad exhibition on Thursday afternoon, dropping game one of the double-header 3-1 and winning game two 6-5.  The games do not count toward the Yellowjackets overall season record, which stands at 10-15.

Dawson jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first in game one and never trailed.  Jordan Waverek pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets, allowing seven hits and three runs over seven innings.  Stephanie Lemon drove in Terilee Ehnes in the top of the fourth to draw MSUB to within 2-1, but the Buccaneers scored an insurance run in the bottom half of the fourth and held on for the 3-1 win.  Ehnes, Lemon, and Tara McIlravey were each 1-for-3 in the game.

The Yellowjackets scored in each of the first three innings of game two to take a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings.  DCC plated three runs in the bottom of the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-4 lead.  The Jackets rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth and held the Bucs scoreless for the final two innings for the win.  Stephanie Cochrun pitched all seven innings for the win, giving up eight hits.

Offensively in game two, the Yellowjackets’ Tahnea Murphy was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.  Murhpy also tripled in the game.  Ann Thompson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Terilee Ehnes was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Lady Jackets will play two more exhibition games on Friday when they host Easter Washington University’s club team.  Game times are scheduled for 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. at Cenex Stadium.  MSUB’s next regular season games will be April 25 and 26 when the Jackets host second place Hawaii-Hilo in Pacific West Conference action.  Double-headers are slated for both days beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Cenex Stadium.
