Career-Highs from Thompson, Stirmlinger Lead Yellowjackets Past Nova Southeastern (March 7, 2003)

BILLINGS, MT – Dan Thompson scored 27 of his career-high 43 points in the second half Friday night as the MSU Billings pulled away from Nova Southeastern for a 106-70 win.  Thompson hit five second-half three-pointers and scored 13-straight points during a two minute stretch of the second half to help the Yellowjackets improve to 17-9.  The Knights fell to 6-20.

Hot shooting from the Knights’ Kluis Wimbush kept Nova in the game early.  He scored 11 of the Knights’ first 16 points.  A Wimbush three-pointer at 14:13 of the first half gave Nova a 13-12 lead.  Wimbush led the Knights with 17 points.  Three others scored 11.

The Yellowjackets followed with a 9-0 run sparked by five points from Thompson and four points from Kyle Stirmlinger to take an eight point lead.  MSUB never trailed again.

Stirmlinger finished with season highs for both points and rebounds.  He netted a career-high 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.  He was 11-of-18 from the field and scored 21 second-half points as he and Thompson outscored the entire Knights team.  The two seniors combined for 48 second-half points to Nova’s 35, and 73 total points to the Knights’ 70.  Thompson's outburst was the highest individual performance at Alterowitz since Marcus Hallgrimson's 51 points against Chaminade in 2000.

Willy Davison handed out 10 assists for his sixth double-digit assist night of the season.  He also passed Billy Foster for No. 4 in the all-time Yellowjacket record book with 409 career assists.

The same teams face off again on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Alterowitz Gymnasium.  The game will be the final home game in the careers of Davison, Stirmlinger and Thompson.  The three seniors will be honored after the conclusion of the game.
